Police now say a Sioux Falls woman was trying to hurt herself and her baby when she crashed her car off Interstate 229 early Tuesday morning.
Authorities said Julia Alzoubaidi told investigators she had suicidal thoughts; she had decided to kill herself and her six-month-old child. After crashing, she took the baby out of the car into the water near the Big Sioux River.
A South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper first on the scene found a baby wet near the water, while Alzoubaidi was in the water.
Both the baby and Alzoubaidi are still in the hospital.
“We’re still monitoring the baby. It seems to be that things are doing okay. The baby’s still in the hospital and probably will be for a period of time,” Sioux Falls Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said.
She has been charged with attempted first-degree murder as well as felony child abuse.
Avera Health confirmed to KELOLAND News that Alzoubaidi is a psychologist with the health care system.
