Investigators say an 8-month-old boy died on Monday after he was found not breathing inside a north Sioux Falls apartment.

At about 10:45 a.m. Monday, authorities received a 911 call to the 600 block of West Rice Street where a child was not breathing. He was brought to a hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead.

Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said detectives will closely review the investigation based on the age of the victim.

“At this point, it’s just like any other unattended death,” Clemens said. “We always take a closer look when there’s somebody young that ends up dying.”

Police expect to receive an initial report soon from the coroner’s office after an autopsy is conducted on Tuesday. No charges have been filed but the investigation is ongoing.

Clemens described an unattended death as any death that occurs outside the presence of a medical official. If charges are filed, police will likely wait for the full autopsy report to deem the death as suspicious.

“We’ve seen people that have died before, had an investigation and turned out that there was nothing suspicious that happened,” Clemens said. “We’ve seen unattended deaths that have later been ruled as homicides or some type of assault that happened.”
