Imagine feeding hundreds of hungry mouths. That’s exactly what it’s like at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

Every year KELOLAND Media Group hosts a food drive for the animal shelter.

Last year, the event pulled in thousands of pounds of dog and cat food.

The need is great once again this year.

Morgan Green may just become a cat mom of two.

“Our cat rascal is very energetic and we kind of want someone else to keep up with his energy and she just seems like she is ready to get out,” Potential Adopter Morgan Green said.

That’s why she’s browsing the cat room at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

She found one she likes.

There are more than 200 cats for potential adopters to choose from.

That doesn’t even include strays or cats in foster care.

Why so many? Summer is kitten season, which is one of the reasons.

“So we can get anywhere from one stray cat to eight all at one time,” Special Events Coordinator Allison Wyant said.

Allison Wyant with the Humane Society says the high number isn’t unusual, but it certainly is a lot of mouths to feed.

“We’ve had a couple of adoption events, but no matter how many go out, there’s always some coming in,” Wyant said.

Of course the need doesn’t end with cats.

The shelter has dogs too, including the 20-25 that are available for adoption.

Whether you’re a dog person or a cat lover, Green just wants to see more of these animas land in forever homes.

“I like the idea of rescuing an animal,” Green said.

The Pet Food and Supplies Drive is Friday, August 31, from 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

All you have to do is pull up to KELOLAND Television on Phillips Avenue in Sioux Falls and drop off your donation.

The shelter requests dry Purina brand food for puppies, dogs, kittens, and cats.
