Paul Erickson’s Connection To Maria Butina

Wednesday on KELOLAND News at six — we broke the news on the indictment of Paul Erickson, the political operative who was dating alleged Russian spy Maria Butina.

Thursday KELOLAND News uncovered that the South Dakota native is also the target of an investigation in Washington that could further link him to Butina.

Although no charges have been filed in the Washington probe, there are clues in Paul Erickson’s indictment that some of his alleged financial transactions may be linked to Maria Butina.

According to court documents obtained by KELOLAND News, in the money laundering portion of the indictment, it notes a $20,000 payment from one of Erickson’s accounts to American University in 2017, when Butina was attending graduate school there.

Also in the indictment there are another $9,000 in payments directed to a recipient whose initials are listed as only “M.B.”

KELOLAND News has tried repeatedly to talk with Erickson over the past year. The only time we got through to him was over his apartment intercom.

We asked him about reports that he was trying to arrange a meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Oh, it didn’t exactly happen that way,”  Erickson said.

Erickson has been released on bond.  Some of the conditions of his bond are that he not posses any weapons and turn in his passport.

Butina is now serving time in federal prison for being a secret agent.
