Today is a busy day out on the water, and with that the Pennington County Sheriff’s office wants to make sure you stay safe this holiday.

While you may think of seeing the sheriff’s office on the streets in Pennington County, today they are out patrolling in the water. Kraig Wood is a lieutenant with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and says education is key to keeping boaters safe.

“We try to educate people but if for certain infractions if the circumstances warrant it we will give written warnings, we’ll give citations, we will makes arrests for BUI infractions,” Wood said.

This is the second summer the Pennington County Sheriff’s office has been out patrolling Pactola Reservoir and Sheridan Lake.

“We saw a need for public safety wise to have the boat out on the water, to provide some extra safety for the boaters and the people out here on the lake enjoying themselves,” Wood said.

The sheriff’s office works with Game Fish and Parks patrolling the two lakes, to make sure that you are following the rules.

“We try to distribute our resources so that if they’re on one lake, we’re on the other, that’s generally how we do our boat enforcement,” Wood said.

Teresa Maxwell is vacationing in the Black Hills this week with her family. While taking a break from the water she still knows the importance of staying safe on a boat.

“It’s very important because you never know what could happen when you’re out there, you could hit a wave and be thrown off,” Maxwell said.

Which is why these officers are making sure you enjoy your holiday safely.

“The main goal for us is education, so that people know what the laws are, they know what they need to do to keep themselves safe when they’re out on the water,” Wood said.

The sheriff’s office usually goes out to patrol every weekend and will continue until the end of the summer.
