Outdoor Pools Get Ready To Open

News

The Midco Aquatic Center has been open all winter long, but soon five outdoor pools will open in Sioux Falls.

That means more training for lifeguards and monitoring chemical levels. The outdoor pools around Sioux Falls are quiet, for now.

“We like to get ready about two weeks before the recreation staff does their training,” said Richard Carlson from Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation.

Next week, city lifeguards will be the first to dive in to the outdoor pools.

“All the lifeguards will be out at the outdoor pools doing their training,” said Carlson.

Eight-year-old Olivia Haugan says she likes that she can swim inside at the Midco Aquatic Center during the winter, but she’s ready to get outside.

“I like swimming outside, so I can hear the birds while I swim,” Haugan said.

However, she had some choice words for the lifeguards.

“There’s too many rules,” said Haugan.

Rules, that are important, according to Parks and Recreation.

“Every rule we have, we have for a reason,” said Jean Pearson, a Sioux Falls Recreation Coordinator.

Jean Pearson is the Parks and Recreation coordinator for Sioux Falls.

She’s busy getting her lifeguards ready for the summer.

“Many of my lifeguards are in college, so they left me in August,” said Pearson.

Weekly training gets them back on track.

“I tell them we have to get them back in their swimming brain,” said Pearson.

More open pools, means more responsibility for Richard Carlson

“They do the chemical readings hourly,” said Carlson from Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation.

Olivia tests the waters, too, when she runs on the pool deck.

“I land on my butt and it hurts,” said Haugan.

All parts, of suiting up for a busy season.

Sioux Falls pools will open June 2, weather permitting.

The pools are heated, so the Parks and Recreation department doesn’t think that will be a problem.
