No, Bob Barker Is Not Dead

You asked. We’re here to answer. Is it real or fake? We’re starting a new investigative series to weed out fact from fiction on your social media feeds.

We all turn to social media to catch up on what’s going on in the world, which is why you may have heard that long-time game show host Bob Barker is dead.

KELOLAND News Investigates looks into the story about the South Dakota native. Barker grew up on the Rosebud Indian Reservation here in South Dakota. He then spent decades right here on KELOLAND TV as the host of “Price is Right.”

But have you seen this post on Facebook?

The headline says “Former Price Is Right Host Bob Barker Dead At Age 94” when you click on the link from “Action News 3” it brings you to an article saying Barker was rushed to the emergency room after a fall that split his head open. Several hours later, the report says he was pronounced dead.

KELOLAND News can confirm this story is FAKE.

However some of the story is based on truth.

The 93-year-old did go to the hospital last month after hitting the back of his head during a fall.

However, his rep told Entertainment Tonight that Bob Barker was “doing fine” at the time.

Barker suffered a similar fall in 2015 on a sidewalk outside his home. A local company donated its time and services to fix the sidewalk at no cost to the City of Los Angeles to repair it.

“I certainly appreciate it. I’ve been giving away refrigerators all my life, now someone’s giving me a sidewalk,” Barker said in the 2016 interview.

So, why is this latest story proclaiming his death spreading like wildfire? It could be because it’s partially based on fact due his recent fall.

Another reason could be because of the source: Action News 3 sounds like a TV station. However, this site is a generator of fake news stories.

KELOLAND News can’t verify any of the stories on its homepage.

See something fishy on social media? Let the KELOLAND News Investigates team determine if it’s real or fake.
