New Details In Investigation Into Yankton Woman's Death

We are learning more about the man accused of murdering a Yankton woman.

45-year old Steve Falkenberg is in the Yankton County jail.  Authorities believe he killed Tammy LaFramboise, whose body turned up in a Michigan River.

LaFramboise was last seen leaving her apartment on the edge of Yankton on Friday, March 1.

Yankton County authorities tell us they actively searched for days and reached out to the media on March 7.

Two weeks after she disappeared, someone found a woman’s body hundreds of miles away in the Little River in Michigan’s upper peninsula.  Investigators weren’t sure how long she’d been in the water.

Monday afternoon, authorities arrested Steve Falkenberg in Sioux Falls.  They drove him to Yankton and booked him in jail at 10:44 p.m.  A news release says he’s being charged with second-degree murder.

You may be wondering how her body ended up in Michigan.  The local paper says Falkenberg has family ties in the area, including a step-brother who owns property along the river.

Authorities did an autopsy on Monday, received the results on Tuesday and are planning a news conference Wednesday in Michigan.

Because the investigation involves at least two states, the FBI and South Dakota’s DCI are both involved.
