A Sioux Falls man is out $10,000 after a scam on Facebook.

Police say the 58-year-old got a Facebook message from a person who he thought was his friend.

It told him that he had won more than $800,000 and gave him instructions to buy iTunes and Walmart gift cards. He then gave the scammers the pin numbers for the cards.

“Sometime after that he ended up talking to his friend. When he talked to them, he said, ‘I didn’t send you any message.’ That’s when he learned this was a scam,” Sioux Falls Police Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said.

Police remind you that if someone wants money or gift cards up front before giving you a prize, it’s likely a scam.
