A beloved event in Sioux Falls hit a road block Wednesday.
Hot Summer Nites was canceled because of the threat of bad weather.
Mark Oerther is cruising through KELOLAND in his Corvette.
Kelli Volk: Why do you like Corvettes so much?
Oerther: Because after you drive one you always want one.
The Louisville, KY man made a stop at Jerry’s Chevrolet of Beresford earlier Wednesday for a kickoff event to the Black Hills Corvette Classic.
“After we leave here we were supposed to go downtown and do the cruise down there,” Corvette Owner Mark Oerther said.
However, the risk of inclement weather has put the brakes on Hot Summer Nites in downtown Sioux Falls.
“I’m disappointed it’s going to rain tonight, but other than that I’m fine,” Oerther said.
“We made the call this morning to cancel the event and I think it’s the first time we’ve canceled,” Brienne Maner of DTSF said.
Brienne Maner with Downtown Sioux Falls calls it a difficult decision to make and one that isn’t taken lightly.
“We just want the public to know we have their best interest at heart and we have public safety top of mind,” Maner said.
For Oerther it’s just a detour in his plans. He’ll be back on the road Thursday to Spearfish for the remainder of the Black Hills Corvette Classic.
“When we finish this we’re going to move onto Yellowstone and some other parts of the country,” Oerther said.
Some Corvette owners gathered Wednesday for their own party.
On Thursday the crowd will wake up and drive to Spearfish for the Black Hills Corvette Classic.
