The health benefits of PiYo

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — When you think of yoga, you might think of relaxation.

But one class is putting a different twist on the common practice.

Class Member Suzy Nat never misses a chance to step onto her mat.

“So this is a nice addition to my weights out in the weight room or my step classes so this is a nice change,” Nat said.

The class is called PiYo. It combines pilates with yoga. And it’s set to music.

“The music is intense. It’s strong and we really go to the beat of the music,” Fitness Instructor Kelsey Schwartlze said.

Schwartzle is leading the room at the Sanford Wellness Center on Oxbow.

If you plant to join a PiYo class you can expect to work your entire body.

“For the most part it is a more high-intensity workout, but it’s low impact in the sense that we don’t use equipment. It’s simply using your mat and going through these poses and really focusing on balance and flexibility,” Schwartzle said.

Nat has noticed an improvement in her balance.

“What I enjoy the most about this class is you’re using your own body strength, total body workout,” Nat said.

Schwartzle says the class is for people of all athletic abilities, whether you’re a beginner or a regular like Nat.

You can find a schedule of classes here.
