The St. Francis House is on its way to big changes, and this week it hit a fundraising landmark: $2 million for a new facility.

Frankie Webb has been a guest at the St. Francis House since February.

“I did a five year stretch in prison, and I was up for parole, and I don’t have a place to stay,” Webb said. “St. Francis House welcomed me here, gave me that opportunity to have a place to stay.”

The St. Francis House is planning a dramatic face lift in the coming years. Other than the family buildings, everything will be new, and they’re using a $5.5 million fundraising campaign to get there.

“It’s the difference between being on the streets and being in a safe place,” Executive Director Julie Becker said. “In Frankie’s situation, it is knowing that he’s not only in a safe place, but he knows that he has a case manager that’s making sure that he’s taking his medications and that he is taking care of himself.”

With the new facility, the organization will have more room for people to rest their heads.

“We will go from 80 to 120 single beds for men and women,” Becker said.

There will also be more room for other services.

“Dress for Success has a mobile unit,” Becker said. “They want to come and work with our guests here, but we really don’t have much of a space, and the dining area is really where a lot of people sit and be able to have their quiet time.”

For guests, this St. Francis House is more than a roof and food.

“It means a lot to me, to have this place,” Webb said. “They treat me so nice here, as a guest, make me feel like I’m part of the family, and I appreciate the St. Francis House a hell of a lot.”
