South Dakota woman faces prison time for connection to the death of her child

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A 22-year-old Saint Francis, South Dakota woman will spend more than a year in prison in connection with the death of her child. Chelsea Nixon pled guilty in February to involuntary manslaughter.

Authorities say back in August, Nixon had taken meth and stayed up late the night before. She fell asleep while bottle feeding her child.

A family member found the two later on and noticed Nixon’s shoulder was covering the child’s face. The cause of death was reported as asphyxia due to smothering.

Nixon will also spend three years on supervised release.
