Sioux Falls Man, School Custodian, Arrested In Connection To Found Gun

News

A custodian with the Sioux Falls School District has been arrested in connection with the handgun found at the Career and Technical Education Academy on Friday.

Joseph Croal, 25, of Sioux Falls, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm in a school and false reporting to law enforcement.

According to the jail website, Croal’s bond is set at $5,025. He is scheduled to be in court on Tuesday.

Court papers says bullets were found near the garbage in a men’s bathroom and the gun was hidden in the ceiling. Following a weekend long investigation, police brough Croal into custody.

Authorities did not say why Croal allegedly brought the gun, but say they don’t believe there was any threat to students or school safety.

“We think it was just some bad decisions on this employee’s part and we don’t believe there was any threat at any time to student safety,” Captain Blaine Larson said.

Superintendent Dr. Brian Maher says if the allegations against Croal are true, his employment could be terminated.

In a statement, the SFSD stressed that students or staff were never in danger.

“Safety and security are always our highest priorities,” the release said. “We are fortunate to live and work in a city where the mayor and the police force share that same commitment. Dozens of officers and investigators worked alongside District staff throughout the weekend to lead to this arrest.”
