VERMILLION, S.D. - On Wednesday the University of South Dakota inaugurated their 18th president.
Sheila K. Gestring was inaugurated as President of the University of South Dakota. Students are already showing their support.
"I absolutely love her. I think she's great I think she's doing a great job so far; she represents the student body really well," USD student Devin Martin said.
President Gestring's main focus is accessibility.
"We have to have a state needs based financial aid package for students that are academically prepared and work hard, but need a little help financially to have an opportunity at this life changing institution," President Gestring said.
But she won't forget what has already brought the university this far.
"The same principles that helped USD establish itself as one of the region's premiere public universities are some of the same principles that will help elevate USD into the 21st century," President Gestring said.
Former USD President James Abbott believes the university will flourish under her reign.
"I am confident we have a president that will lead our university far into the future. She is a strong leader, an excellent advocate and spokesperson for higher education," James Abbott said.
Sheila Gestring was the chief financial officer for USD in 2010 and became the university's president this past June.
