SFSD Begins Open Enrollment For Upcoming School Year

News

We’re not even to Christmas break yet and families are already thinking about the next school year.

On Monday, the Sioux Falls School Distract started taking applications for open enrollment.

Some people started showing up Sunday just to be among the first to hand in their open enrollment applications.

After the Monday morning rush, more people started trickling in.

Manny Gutierrez decided to skip the line and drop off his paperwork over the lunch hour.

“My son called me early in the morning and said, ‘Dad, don’t forget to hand in the open enrollment form.’ Okay, I’ll do it on my lunch break,” Gutierrez said.

The Sioux Falls father says his family now lives in the Washington School zone after moving to the east side of town.

But his son has his sights set on somewhere else.

“He even wrote in one of his essays it was his dream to go to Lincoln High School, finish high school there, play sports there,” Gutierrez said.

Meanwhile, Nyssa Ashes is here for her son, Gabriel.

“I went to Oscar Howe for elementary school. And we also plan on moving to that side of town,” Nyssa Ashes said.

For Gutierrez, he says he’s helping his son fulfill his dream.

“That’s what he says he’s going to do so who am I to say no to that?” Gutierrez said.

Applications are time stamped in the order they’re received.

The district will look at each school’s capacity and then determine how many requests can be granted.

If you want to take advantage of open enrollment in the Sioux Falls School District, it’s best to submit your application as soon as possible.
