A local organization is making first responders and military personnel feel appreciated this week. South Dakota Salutes is hosting dozens of people who protect and serve communities in South Dakota for a special shooting competition.
From Sioux Falls Police officers to Veterans, firefighters and more, Hunters Pointe Shooting Complex is welcoming some of the area’s finest this week.
“I’ve got my grandfather’s shotgun from when he was on the police force. So I’m shooting that today. That’s kind of a special thing. I’m hoping to honor him by hitting more than missing,” Shane Deranleau said.
Deranleau is here with two groups from Dell Rapids Fire & Rescue. He’s grateful for the opportunity to do something fun with others who put their lives on the line every day.
“When we have someone that steps up and says thank you, we don’t ask for it, but it’s one of the better feelings that we get is when we get to feel that appreciation from our community,” Deranleau said.
The event is no charge to first responders and military members. Each station and the shells their using are free for the men and women in thanks for their service to their communities.
“We provide targets, ammunition, food and beverages, gifts, door prizes and of course many of them will walk away with bragging rights,” Ton Bour, with South Dakota Saluets, said.
Bour says the competition features 400 shooting events from sporting clays to rifle and pistol tournaments. He says it’s all in an effort to thank a very worthy group of people.
“We don’t have to do it but I think we must do it to show appreciation for these people that do so much for us,” Bour said.
The event runs through Tuesday. South Dakota Salutes also features a special fund that provides support to families of fallen heroes in their time of need.
