Federal health officials are investigating a salmonella outbreak in 26 states including, South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota.

Unlike a recall, where officials tell us to avoid a specific product the multidrug resistant salmonella has been linked to several types and brands of turkey. It’s also been linked to live turkeys and pet food. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials say that means the problem may be widespread in the turkey industry.

So what should you do?

The CDC says you can still buy and eat turkey. Just be careful to avoid cross contamination when you cook it and make sure it’s cooked all the way through.
