Whether you’re visiting or if you live in Sioux Falls, checking out the Falls is a must. Right now, there’s a big road block….literally.
Some projects are closing a main entrance on Phillips Avenue. It’s leaving those who want to find the city’s namesake a little lost.
That includes Jhon Ortiz and Carla Meyer, who were walking along Phillips Avenue Thursday morning.
“I’ve never really ventured out, this is my first time,” Ortiz said.
It’s a rare moment you will see them on the ground. They work for an airline, and landed in Sioux Falls for a long layover.
“Well, we were coming out to see the Falls. Unfortunately there’s some construction going on,” Ortiz said.
“Being our time is very limited, you know, and now it’s taking a little bit of time where we have to backtrack. Yeah, it’s a little inconvenient,” Meyer said.
The entrance on Phillips Avenue is shutdown until about early August. Crews are working on a few projects, including the Levitt at the Falls. That requires workers to doing some sewer upgrades to get ready for the outdoor entertainment venue.
“Really trying to extend the life of the utilities in the area,” Joshua Peterson, Principal Engineer for the City of Sioux Falls, said.
Peterson says people who want to fall in love with the Falls will be patient, and keep this in mind.
“We’ve got construction workers out here as well. They’re just trying to get their job done. They’ll appreciate your patience as well,” Peterson said.
As for these tourists, they’re finding a different route. Being in the airline business, Meyer knows you may have to go through a bit of turbulence to reach your destination.
“Sometimes you have to go through the construction to make it better, unfortunately,” Meyer said.
If you’re in the Downtown area, there’s another entrance nearby. If you’re on Phillips, get on 6th Street and go east until you hit North Weber Avenue. From there, go north until you reach East Falls Park Drive.
