CHESTER, S.D. (KELO) — Sioux Valley Energy is still working on outages in Moody and Lake Counties. Earlier Wednesday, the company posted it straightened a power line and restored power to 240 customers in Chester.
Chester homeowners were in the dark, and business owners lost money due to ongoing outages Wednedsay morning. It was an interesting way to start the morning for people who had been bracing for bad weather. The owner of the Roadside Convenience Store ran into a road block.
“Power went out at 5 o’clock this morning,” Gary Weber said.
The power turned on about an hour later.
“And then went back out,” Weber said.
Weber says when you own a convenience store, being in the dark is more than just a slight inconvenience.
“We lose all of our coolers, minnow tanks aren’t working, so can’t pump gas. Shuts down our computers and everything. It’s — we pretty much shut down,” Weber said.
Five miles east of town, Jennifer Anderson had a similar morning.
“The house was getting real cold. I was ready for a cup of coffee,” Anderson said.
The area could also use a warm-up. Anderson says the weather is already creating tough road conditions.
“Very icy. Very, very icy. Slid a couple of times. Ready for this stuff to be over with. I’m ready for summer,” Anderson said.
Summer is not in the forecast right now, but Weber says there is a bright spot. Crews restored power a little after 10 a.m.
“They were out there. They were out their doing their job right away,” Weber said.
The surge of electricity is giving Weber’s business a much-needed jolt after a long morning.
“We are definitely picking up now and stuff. Everybody’s coming in that couldn’t get stuff before,” Weber said.
