SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Dog owners, unite! A new outdoor space for your furry friends is in the works.
Ten-month-old Charlie is full of energy.
His owner, downtown resident Steve Trezise, is even more excited to see a new green-space for his four-legged friend.
"Well I think it's great. An awareness of our need for more dog parks here," Trezise said.
A portion of a parking lot on 13th St. and 2nd Ave. is being transformed into a doggy oasis.
"We reached out to Norm Drake and his ownership group and they said they be more than happy to make this available for a month for us to use," President of Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. Joe Batcheller said.
Batcheller says the idea is to use recycled resources, like this turf from Howard Wood Field.
"Where you do things lighter, faster, and cheaper and so we thought, let's do a pop-up park," Batcheller said.
With more and more construction taking over the streets of downtown, the pop-up provides a temporary solution for pet owners.
The lack of green space is something Steve and Charlie can relate too.
"We walk him down there quite a lot, which is great, but there's not much in the downtown area itself, so it would be nice to have a pocket-park down there," Trezise said.
Batcheller says this temporary solution may become a permanent placement in downtown, if it meets dog-owners demands.
"And that's the hope is to really drive long-term change, and to have more of those quality of life amenities in this case, a permanent dog park," Batcheller said.
The park will officially open Aug. 7th and remain open through Labor Day.
