SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Sioux Falls police are investigating a homicide and trying to track down a killer.
The case goes back several months, but authorities recently received autopsy results confirming that 43-year-old Shane Birger died from injuries he sustained outside the Gateway Lounge in 2022.
The call originally came into police as a fight at Gateway Lounge on October 27th, 2022. When police arrived, they say they weren’t sure if the victim was in a fight, had fallen or had some type of medical event.
“The victim was having trouble breathing and then he was taken to the hospital. So there was a little bit of confusion, I suppose, over exactly what happened. So that’s kind of where we started that investigation,” Sam Clemens with the Sioux Falls Police Department said.
43-year-old Shane Allen Birger from Sioux Falls died later in the hospital on November 10th.
Now that the coroner’s report has come back, police have a little bit more information. Clemens says the cause of death was listed as a homicide due to a physical altercation.
“The investigation is still ongoing, I think the detective has pretty much talked to a lot of the people, or most of the people that were there so still making headway with this but at this point in time, no arrests, no charges have been made,” Clemens said.
This is now the seventh homicide for last year in Sioux Falls and the second to remain unsolved.
KELOLAND News reached out to the owner of the Gateway, who says they are cooperating with the investigation.
Birger’s obituary says he was a proud father of four children, an avid sports fan and ‘lived his life to the fullest no matter how silly he looked.’
