Parents Share Concerns Over Gun On CTE Campus

Sioux Falls, S.D. - A lot of people have been talking about the gun situation at the Career and Technical Education Academy (CTE) campus. KELOLAND News decided to talk to a few parents to see how they feel about the discovery, and how the school district handled it.

It's been a tense few days for some Sioux Falls parents.

"We're in South Dakota and guns are a part of life in South Dakota, but it's a concerning thing for me when it's found inside of a school and it's loaded," said Charlene Carothers, mother of two high school students in the Sioux Falls School District.

Charlene Carothers has two kids in Sioux Falls schools. The last few days have been scary for her, but she's happy with how things have been unfolding.

The school district sent out email and phone notifications, letting parents know what was happening, and why they chose to release certain information at different times.

"I feel that they actually did handle it very well and they kept us aware of what was going on and when it was happening," said Carothers.

"The Sioux Falls School system is fantastic. They're doing a great job. Absolutely. You have to err on the side of caution and I think that's what this was all about," said Darrel Fickbohm, father of a daughter who is homeschooled.

Even though Darrel Fickbohm home-schools his daughter, he still gets the District notifications. He says safety had nothing to do with his choice to homeschool, but he does believe with so many guns out there, caution is important.

"We just need to watch out for each other. Be as careful as we can be. Things can happen. No matter what, no matter where you are," said Fickbohm.

Carothers says it was concerning this was a staff member who owned the gun, but she trusts the School District to handle the situation and future concerns.
