Organization Helps Kids In Need Get School Supplies

YANKTON, S.D. - From notebooks to backpacks, The Yankton United Way is helping kids in need get ready for class.

"School supplies can be very expensive for families who aren't struggling. But families who might be struggling, it can be crippling. This drive is really important for families that might need school supplies for this year," Tara Bartekoske said.

While this is the second year that the Yankton United Way has done the "Stuff The Bus" school supply drive, this is the first year that they've partnered with Walmart.

"We really like to support the community, our teachers, local schools, so we decided to do 'Stuff The Bus'. We're really excited," Walmart manager Katie Underberg said.

Tara Bartekoske with the Yankton United Way says the organization wants to set up every child to succeed in the classroom.

"Our mission at United Ways is to change lives and improve our community. One of the ways we do that is by promoting educational programs. We feel that when students and youth are equipped for success, then we as a community are equipped for a successful future," Bartekoske said.

And Yankton residents are happy to help, one pencil or folder at a time.

"They don't have to be singled out if maybe they don't have certain things. They can come out and start like everybody else," Stacey Renken said.

Donations will be accepted now through August13th. If you'd like to donate, click here.
