Neighborhood reaction to Ryckman’s arrest

Local News

A 22-year-old Sioux Falls man is in jail after police say he exposed himself to several women.

Carl Ryckman is charged with indecent exposure.

Police say within 48 hours, Ryckman drove up to three different women and asked for directions to Walmart.

When the women got closer to his car, police say he was masturbating. The women were able to get a good description and a license plate number.

Police arrested him Wednesday night at his home in central Sioux Falls.

Ryckman rents the place where he lives at 18th Street and Norton Avenue near Lowell Elementary.
KELOLAND News stopped by there this afternoon and spoke briefly with his landlord and a business across the street that says it has good reason to be concerned by Ryckman’s arrest.

Dress for Success is a non-profit organization that helps hundreds of women, each year, get back on their feet; offering assistance with dress clothes, resume writing and interview skills.

“Some of our ladies are coming from some trust issues with other males and this just kind of complicates that situation,” Lori Strasburg said.

That’s because Carl Ryckman lives just across the street.  Now that he’s been arrested, charged with three counts indecent exposure, Strasburg feels she’ll have to let her clients know.

“We probably will have to say something to them, because we want them to feel like that this is a place where they are respected and honored and make sure they are not feeling any trepidation about coming here for services,”

Roger Engbrecht is Ryckman’s landlord.  He says he heard about his arrest on the news.

“Very much a surprise to me, never anticipated anything like this would happen, really a surprise,” Engbrecht said.

In fact, he says Ryckman, who lives by himself, seemed like a good person.

“He was a very good tenant, very quiet, always paid his rent, kept the place neat and clean,” Engbrecht said.

Ryckman’s bail was set at $5,000 cash surety.
