Names Released Of Two Men Killed By Semi Near Hot Springs

The names of the two men killed by a semi-truck near Hot Springs on Friday night have been released. 

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, Reuben Gilbert, 25, stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base and Christopher Swope, 27, of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, were killed when a semi-truck lost control due to icy road conditions. The semi-truck and trailer jackknifed and hit the two men, who were pronounced dead at the scene. 

Gilbert lost control of his car and the car rolled into the ditch. Gilbert was able to get out of the car, while Swope stopped to provide assistance. Both men were then struck by the semi-truck. 

The crash happened on U.S. Highway 18, which was closed for about six hours. 

Gjorgi Djateve, 27, of Jackson, N.J. had non-life threatening injuries and went to the hospital. He was wearing a seatbelt. 

The crash is still under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
