Mother In Custody In Connection With Infant's Death

SIOUX FALLS, SD - Sioux Falls Police have arrested the mother of a four-month-old who died on Wednesday. Authorities took 22-year-old Angelia Berg into custody shortly after 5 p.m. on Friday. Investigators say she was passed out drunk leading up to the baby girl's death. She faces charges of child abuse, contributing to abuse and knowing a child is around meth.

According to court papers, on Wednesday, police arrested Daniel Uecker for meth possession. He's allegedly tied to this case as he was Berg's boyfriend.

When investigators found the baby, she was unresponsive on a mattress that was covered in plastic. Berg and the baby had just left Children's Inn a few days ago.  Berg left to go back to her boyfriend's apartment to mend their relationship. Court papers show he faced charges in the past for domestic abuse against her.

According to court papers, on July 31, Berg drank a bottle of tequila when she got to Uecker's apartment on North Dakota Avenue.

"And actually, she said she drank to the point in which she passed out," Sioux Falls Police Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said.

Uecker allegedly stayed up all night smoking meth out of a lightbulb while Berg and the baby were in the apartment. Even though he says didn't sleep, he left to go to work the next morning at 5:15.

"And he heard the baby was crying at that time when he left the apartment," Clemens said.

Almost three hours later, Berg woke up in the living room. Authorities say she was on her phone for some time and then called out to the four-month-old who was sleeping in a nearby bedroom. She found the baby unresponsive and called 911. The little girl was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Berg talked with investigators, who let her go. After that, police say the Minnehaha County State's Attorney found enough evidence to charge her.

"We haven't had any contact with her since. So, I mean, there was an initial interview that happened. There's a chance she may not even know there's a warrant issued for her arrest," Clemens said.

While police were looking for Berg, Clemens said they didn't know where she lives or where she's staying. As for the baby, the autopsy states the cause of death as "undetermined."

This isn't the first time Berg's been in trouble. We also did a background check. She pleaded guilty to drug charges last September. In May, a judge sentenced her to two years probation.
