DES MOINES, IOWA (KELO) — The mother of an Iowa student who was brutally killed last year made an emotional appeal on her daughter’s birthday.
Mollie Tibbetts would have turned 21 Wednesday. And her mom is asking everyone to donate $21 to “Mollie’s Movement.” That’s a fundraiser for an adolescent psychiatric unit at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.
“It’s bringing awareness to that, I mean we talk about everything else these days, so what’s wrong with that? Help them while they’re young before it manifests into something bigger,” Laura Calderwood said.
She says the suspected killer – Cristhian Bahena Rivera – suffered from mental illness.
And Calderwood says if someone helped him when he was a child, her family’s heartbreak might have been prevented.
