SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - For the last few weeks, the Sioux Falls bomb squad has been holding a contest to name its new robot. The finalists, representing three different schools, were Boomer, Agent 605 and Trax. On Wednesday, police unveiled the winner.
"The winner was Agent 605. That received 1,599 votes," Sam Clemens of the Sioux Falls Police Department said.
Good news travels fast at St. Mary Elementary.
"We won," St. Mary principal Michelle Shields said.
5th grader Sidney Kunkel is the one who came up with the name, "Agent 605."
"I was researching some names like detective names. I saw our area code and put agent in front of it: Agent 605," Kunkel said.
Kunkel not only thought of the idea, she worked hard to get a lot of those 1,599 votes.
"My mom voted, and my dad voted. My friends' parents all told me they voted. My teachers told me they voted and I have a lot of like aunts and uncles that voted and grandmas and grandpas," Kunkel said.
The hard work paid off for Kunkel and her classmates. The bomb squad is visiting the school next week to demonstrate how Agent 605 works.
"I'm excited to see the robot up close," Kunkel said.
"We're very excited to have the police department come out, give us that demonstration. I think it will be good for the students to see the work that the police department does to keep us safe," Shields said.
A name that's led to plenty of hive fives at St. Mary.
The bomb squad visits the school on December 20. We plan to have a news crew there for the big demonstration.
