Local News

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A special walk and 5K this next weekend will bring together those affected by suicide in KELOLAND.

The Helpline Center’s 8th Annual Step Forward To Prevent Suicide is set for next Sunday at the Falls Park Farmer’s Market shelter. Last year’s event hosted 1,200 people and raised $62,000. Dean Krietlow is the honorary speaker this year. He lost his brother to suicide 15 years ago and has received support from the Helpline Center.

“I’ve taken classes. There’s support groups where you can go and talk with people that are in the same situation as you. They’ve got people on staff to talk to talk to people who are contemplating suicide or just struggling with the loss of somebody,” Krietlow said.

The event takes place this Sunday morning. You do need to register but there is no fee. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. with the walk and run beginning at 9 a.m. A remembrance ceremony will follow. If you’d like to call the Helpline Center, dial 211. If you need to speak to someone regarding suicide, you can call the National Suicide and Crisis Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.
