A former bookkeeper at McCrossan Boys Ranch faces federal charges.
Crystal Nelson is accused of taking money from the charity for nearly five years.
Court papers say she added money to her paychecks, wrote out checks for cash and used McCrossan's credit cards for personal expenses.
McCrossan's executive director tells KELOLAND News that Nelson was a trusted employee.
He says as soon as they discovered something was wrong, she was immediately relieved of her duties
He wants supporters to know additional safeguards are now in place to prevent future fraud.
Here is the executive directors full statement:
"Unfortunately, McCrossans has been victimized by a trusted employee and through some excellent collaboration between our business manager and auditors, we were able to uncover this fraud before it became a worse situation. This matter is now in the capable hands of law enforcement and the judicial system. Ms. Nelson was immediately relieved of her duties upon discovery of her wrongful conduct and law enforcement was contacted immediately."
We want to assure our donors and supporters that additional safeguards have been put in place to protect our agency from this type of fraud in the future.
This will not deter McCrossans from staying true to our mission of "providing new hope for a better life."
