Authorities say a firefighter died and a deputy was hospitalized after responding to a structure fire in Western South Dakota.

Rapid City Fire Lt. Jim Bussell says one firefighter “died in the line of duty” while battling the blaze Friday, and a Meade County sheriff’s deputy was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Bussell also says one civilian remains unaccounted for.

Fire crews were dispatched around 4 p.m. to the scene in Tilford, about 20 miles north of Rapid City. When they arrived, the blaze had spread to some outbuildings.

Bussell says several agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are investigating the fire.

Names of the firefighter, deputy and civilian have not yet been released. The cause of the blaze is unknown.
