The tiny town of Hudson, South Dakota grew by thousands Wednesday night as people gathered for a special fundraiser that’s been going on for months. The fundraiser is put on by the Southeast Area Pink Ladies dart league where a portion of the money raised helps cancer patients. People had a chance to win over $300,000 Wednesday night.
If your ticket was drawn, you got a chance to draw from a deck of cards hoping to grab the Queen of Diamonds. There were only three cards left. And Wednesday night’s ticket winner… was lucky enough to pick the right card.
The crowd cheered as Ryan Gordon from Montrose drew the Queen of diamonds. After all he wins over $300,000.
“This is unreal. This is unfathomable,” winner Ryan Gordon said.
Gordon says there were 12 people in his group that purchased 600 tickets tonight.
“I didn’t have the numbers in my hand, my uncle did, and he was just ahead of me a little ways and he came and said, ‘we’re in the money,’ and I just laughed at him and said ‘you have to be kidding me,'” Gordon said.
The fundraiser has been going on for months. There’s no shortage of people to buy tickets during each drawing. Sara Pearson, with the Southeast Area Pink Ladies says this fundraiser exceeded their expectations.
“We’re pretty overwhelmed right now, we had a goal of raising $20,000 and we far exceeded that goal and we are going to be able to help so many people with this money,” Southeast Area Pink Ladies, Sara Pearson said.
Pearson says they plan to continue with the fundraiser in the future.
“We’re going to take a little bit of a break, probably three months, and then start again, we want to make sure everybody comes out again and supports us again,” Pearson said.
As for Gordon he’s happy he chose the right card.
“I figured it was going to be dead down center so I went the center card,” Gordon said.
A fun way to bring people together and raise money for a good cause.
Gordon says this was his groups second week coming out to partake in the fundraiser. He says he doesn’t know exactly what they will use the money for, but some of it to help pay bills.
