SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Law enforcement is praising five South Dakota DOT crew members for saving a life.
Crews were working at the Interstate 90 overpass at Marion Road when a teenager climbed onto the overpass, intending to commit suicide. Gary Steinhoff, Chris Peters, Adam Feistner, Jordan Doane and Kurt Theisen jumped into action. They stopped traffic in one lane and tried to break his fall when he jumped.
Authorities say the DOT workers then held him down, so he wouldn't run out into traffic.
Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead is praising the crew members for their heroic actions.
"Quite frankly, these Department of Transportation workers saved this young man's life. Their quick thinking resulted in the individual only having minimal injuries," Milstead said.
One of the workers was treated for minor injuries. The runaway was taken to the hospital; the sheriff says he is getting the help that he needs.
