Some dog owners in Pierre are feeling pretty thankful.
On Monday, the Pierre Fire department rescue squad saved a dog that had fallen into the icy Missouri River.
The rescue squad captain says the dog was chasing after a goose when it fell into open water. The dog wasn’t able to get back to shore by itself because of the icy conditions.
But a squad member put on some winter water rescue gear and was able to make it out to the dog and bring it back to shore.
Officials say the owners did the right thing by calling for help, instead of trying to save the dog on their own.
And good news. The dog is OK.
