Defense Asks To Move Sideras Case Twice, Requests New Judge

Local News

It was one of the biggest stories of 2017 when we first learned that Sioux Falls Fire Chief Jim Sideras was charged with child pornography. But there’s been very little mention of it since then.

One year after his arrest, defense lawyers have asked the court to delay Sideras’s trial twice now and also asked for a new judge. A criminal defense lawyer, who used to prosecute cases in Sioux Falls, says that’s probably part of the defense’s strategy.

“It’s very very high profile, I’m sure his attorneys are asking for as many delays as they can get,” Hope Matchan said. “There’s a theory out there that a delay in a criminal case only helps one person and that person is the defendant.”

Why is the case taking so long? Is there a plea deal in the works? If convicted will Sideras spend time in prison?  KELOLAND’s Don Jorgensen has been digging into the case to find out why it is slowly making its way through the court system.
