Avon Furniture Store Fire: “End Of An Era”

Local News

It’s a sad week for a community in southeastern KELOLAND.

A fire destroyed Powers Furniture and Appliance on Avon’s Main Street Tuesday night.

The Avon Fire Chief says the call came in at about 7:20 p.m.

On Wednesday afternoon, all that was left was a pile of smoking rubble. But before flames broke out Tuesday night, it was one family’s livelihood.

It’s our furniture store, Owner Kenny Powers said.

It’s our life, Owner Stacey Powers said.

Our life, Owner Florence Powers said.

Kenny Powers spent half a lifetime working in this store.

End of an era. Or two or three, Florence Powers said.

About 60-70 firefighters from several area fire departments battled the blaze together.

It was huge. We had a ladder set up right on Main up front and they were way in the air and the flames were almost touching the ladder truck at times, Avon Fire Chief Kevin Tjeerdsma said.

Kevin Tjeerdsma is the Avon Fire Chief.

We saved one building that was next to it, but we didn’t save the Powers Furniture store, Tjeerdsma said.

Tjeerdsma says authorities will be on scene for another day.

Meanwhile, the Powers family isn’t sure what their next step will be.

But even through all this smoke, one thing is clear.

It’s a loss for the community.

A lot of people supported them and they supported the Avon community also, Tjeerdsma said.

And the support keeps coming in.

Lot of support, Kenny Powers said.

Wonderful, Florence Powers said.

My phone’s ringing right now, Kenny Powers said.

The cause is still under investigation.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.
