Kitten Season Causes Food Shortage

News

It’s kitten season! While that may sound adorable and fun, it’s actually causing some troubles for the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. We stopped by the shelter to see how you can help with their latest need.

“This is just the time of year where cats start having babies,” said Sioux Falls Area Humane Society kennel manager, LaVerne Aventi.

This law of nature is causing some issues with the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. Right now, they have roughly 89 cats. That’s not counting those in quarantine, too young to adopt, or in foster care. And all of those felines eat a lot of food each day.
“The rough number was 75 pounds of kitten food. With all of those,” said Aventi.

That’s why the Humane Society is asking for your help. The food they have right now will probably get them through the weekend, but after that they’ll still have mouths to feed.

“This little guy definitely needs a home. He needs his own person to lick every day,” said Aventi.

Helping provide a place to live would also help. Aventi says taking in a cat is low-maintenance and stress relieving after a long day.

“You watch them play. You watch them run. They do wild and crazy things. I taught my cat to turn off the light with a laser pointer,” said Aventi.

While not every cat will learn elaborate tricks, they could definitely use some humans to give them love.

“We have so many that need good homes. We have a lot of groups of kittens, there’s siblings. We have individuals. Everybody needs a good home,” said Aventi.

The kind of food the Humane Society uses is Purina Kitten Chow, in the yellow bag. They do not want any canned foods.
