KELOLAND Employees Volunteering At Five Local Nonprofits Friday

News

KELOLAND Media Group is encouraging everyone to give back to their local communities this week. Our employees will be serving at five different nonprofits this Friday as part of our Founder’s Day of Caring.

Raquel Nino has been staying at the St. Francis House in Sioux Falls for the past three weeks.

“Very helpful. Very encouraging and the advice they give us, the food. They’re very welcoming here,” Nino said.

After getting into trouble with the law, Nino is planning for a bright future. She landed her second job today and moving forward, hopes to volunteer her time in gang prevention.

“I just want to help younger women. Younger girls, teenage girls, help them not follow the path that I followed in my younger age,” Nino said.

Volunteers are needed to serve lunch and dinner at the St. Francis House each day. A team from KELOLAND will be there this Friday. Executive Director Julie Becker says TV coverage boosts community involvement in the organization’s cause to move people from homelessness to hope.

“It’s amazing and that has drawn in so many people to come in and say, ‘Oh I saw this on TV. Can we sign up too?’ It’s really impactful when people are able to see that,” Becker said.

Not only will a handful of KELO employees be volunteering at the St. Francis House on Friday, we’ll also be volunteering at several other locations including the Banquet.

“Our numbers really, really skyrocket in the summer and there’s no school lunch. So kids are hungry,” Banquet Development and Marketing Director Madeline Shields said.

With breakfast, Banquet West and the downtown location, Shields says the group serves up to 1,000 meals a day. This time of year, it’s tough to find people and businesses to serve those meals.

“June we have more than 12 dates that are still open for serving as well as July. I think we have 12-15,” Shields said.

So, if you can find time, many local organizations could use your help this week and beyond.

Last year on Founder’s Day, KELOLAND Media Group volunteered with Lunch Is Served, The Banquet, Habitat for Humanity and The Boys and Girls Club of the Sioux Empire. This Friday, we’ll also be working with Call To Freedom, Dakotabilities and the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House.
