The first GEAR UP-related trial began Monday morning. Jury selection for Stephanie Hubers’ case started at 9 a.m. at the Minnehaha County Courthouse.

Hubers is a former Mid-Central Educational Cooperative staffer accused of getting more than $50,000 to keep quiet about embezzlement by Mid-Central’s business manager and his wife before their deaths in 2015.

In the first set of potential jurors interviewed by the defense attorneys and Attorney General Marty Jackley, eight people were dismissed for pre-formed opinions about the case.

Attorneys asked the potential jurors about their thoughts on moonlighting or holding a “side gig,” working with money, “Monday morning quarterbacking,” and judging a case based on sympathy.

Another panel of potential jurors will be interviewed Monday afternoon.

The judge hopes to have the jury selected by Monday night.

Evidence could start being introduced as early as Tuesday morning.

Authorities launched an investigation after Mid-Central business manager, Scott Westerhuis, killed his wife and children in a murder-suicide.

Two others are also facing felony charges in the embezzlement scheme. Their trials will begin in early July.
