It’s finally feeling like spring, but every winter people die in harsh conditions in our area. They may be abusing substances or homeless. Police say even one person dying of exposure is one too many.
KELOLAND’s Angela Kennecke has been looking into these deaths and has tracked down the family of one man found under the viaduct.
Angela Kennecke: January 15th was one of the first nights this winter where temperatures plummeted below freezing in Sioux Falls. The next morning a “John Doe” was found under the 10th Street viaduct.
He was taken to the hospital where he died. Now a federally required advocacy group, Disability Rights South Dakota is looking into the circumstances surrounding his death.
“We also have the right to access documents that relate to that death, from certain facilities, to hospitals to police records,” Nicole Perry with Disability Rights South Dakota said.
KELOLAND Investigates has also obtained the man’s medical records. What led up to John Doe being under the viaduct in the first place?
We go searching for answers to discover why this man slipped through the cracks like so many with mental illnesses do, Monday night on “John Doe, Death Under The Viaduct,” at 10.
