KELOLAND Investigates first told you that the husband of a Sioux Falls realtor was a “person of interest” in her death.  Now we know Melissa Peskey’s death is a homicide investigation. Peskey was shot dead on Interstate 70 in Missouri.

While some of the details are still vague, we have new information from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Peskey had left Sioux Falls with her two children, reportedly on her way to South Carolina. Her husband was not in the car with her.  She was on Interstate 70 in Missouri near Boonville, which is between Kansas City and St. Louis, when someone took her life.

It was along a location on Interstate 70 in Cooper County, Missouri, where troopers responded to a report of a single car crash.  They were called at 10:30 p.m. last Thursday.  When they arrived, they found 40-year-old Melissa Peskey dead in the driver’s seat.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is staying tight-lipped about their investigation as they try to determine if it was a random act or if Peskey was targeted. Investigators have received 30 leads in the case so far.

KELOLAND News spoke with Ryan Peskey over the phone on Tuesday.

Ryan Peskey told us that he is a “person of interest” in his wife’s death.  He said he didn’t pick up the phone when investigators called him to inform him of what happened because he was sleeping.  Hours later when they called back, he told us, he did take the call.

The Peskeys’ two children, ages 5 and 11, were traveling with their mother and were not hurt.
Ryan Peskey attended a custody hearing in Missouri Wednesday morning to try to bring them back to South Dakota, along with his wife’s body.

KELOLAND’s Angela Kennecke left him a message to find out what happened at that hearing, but he has not yet returned the call.

KELOLAND News will continue to follow this case and bring you the latest information as we get it.
