An Illinois woman could face at least 20 years in prison for selling heroin to a South Dakota man who later died from an apparent overdose.

U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons announced Monday that 26-year-old Stephanie Broecker was arrested in Illinois and made a court appearance on April 10. A grand jury in Sioux Falls indicted her for selling heroin by mail to the 30-year-old unidentified man in Miner County.

The arrest was made as part of a larger national effort to prosecute accused drug dealers for deaths or serious injuries caused by illegal drug use.

Broecker is in custody and awaits transfer to South Dakota to face the federal charges.
