Starting Tuesday, a new weekend visitation policy at a Sioux Falls animal shelter will apply to every day of the week.

In April, the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society began to limit who could walk through the kennels on weekends. Only pre-screened adopters and registered volunteers could access the animals.

But due to the new policy’s success, the humane society will now extend it across weekdays. Executive director Kori Baade said the number of animal bites has gone down.

The number of adoptions made has not been affected, and the society has seen an increase of volunteer applications. The shelter also said that animal stress has been reduced.
