SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - To kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Avera Health is adding a little pink to Sioux Falls.
Community members and staff now have pink hair extensions to help show their support for those fighting the deadly illness.
The name of the event, "We Care Pink Hair" describes what is going on perfectly.
People showing support through a small strip of pink hair.
"My grandma had breast cancer quite a few years ago, and they thought they had got all of it and it actually metastasized to the bone," Kyla Clark said.
Clark says eventually the cancer lead to her grandmother's death. On Monday, she is taking a few minutes out of her workday to show support.
"I still look up to her and she was very strong through her whole fight," Clark said.
Clark isn't the only one in the room with a family tie to breast cancer.
"My mom has been an oncology nurse here at the Prairie Center for several years now and my grandmother also passed away from breast cancer," Becky Frederiksen said.
Frederiksen, a hair stylist, says this is the event's 7th year. She's happy to have participated in all of them.
"I think as women in general we end up with a lot of people that we know who are directly tied and with 1 in 8 women being diagnosed with breast cancer it's bound to happen to someone that we know and love," Frederiksen said.
For a $10 dollar donation, you can have a pink strand that will last about a month.
This isn't the only opportunity to get the pink hair. Both of these stylists will be offering the extensions through the end of the month.
"They're really easy to get in and out and easy to take care of so it's a really fun way for women to just show their support," Liz Schaff said.
"A small thing that I feel like speaks volumes," Clark said.
All the money raised will stay local and help those fighting breast cancer.
