SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Each day, the South Dakota Department of Health plans to update the number of positive COVID-19 cases in the state along with recoveries, negative test results and pending tests. Since March 31, cumulative hospitalizations from COVID-19 has also been reported by the state website.
The state health lab plans to share all South Dakota’s test results from one day and updates the results on the state’s website at COVID.sd.gov. Officials have said from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people being tested does not reflect the level of risk to the public in the state. As coronavirus coverage continues, KELOLAND News has put together a list of commonly-used terms and definitions to help viewers better understand stories and data about COVID-19.
This web page is a running update as test numbers are reported by the Department of Health each day. The state plans to update numbers by noon every day. The updates show results from 5 p.m. the previous day. For more details about the changes with testing in South Dakota, jump to the bottom of this page.
Thursday, December 31
Twenty-four new COVID-19 deaths were reported in Thursday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health.
The death toll is now at 1,488. There have been 542 deaths reported in December.
On Thursday, 445 new total coronavirus cases were announced bringing the state’s total case count to 99,164, up from Wednesday (98,720). Total recovered cases are now at 91,980, up from Wednesday (91,527).
Active cases are now at 5,696, down from Wednesday (5,729). South Dakota was last under 6,000 active cases was on Oct. 12.
Current hospitalizations are at 297, up from Wednesday (293). Total hospitalizations are at 5,672, up from Wednesday (5,639).
Total persons negative is now at 273,476, up from Wednesday (272,739).
There were 1,182 new persons tested reported on Thursday. Thursday’s new person tested positivity rate is 37%.
The latest 7-day all test positivity rate reported by the DOH, is 16%. The DOH calculates that based on the results of the PCR test results but doesn’t release total numbers for how many PCR tests are done daily. The latest 1-day PCR test positivity rate is 15.6%.
Forty-four South Dakota counties are listed as having “substantial” community spread, while 13 South Dakota counties are listed as “moderate” community spread and nine South Dakota counties are listed as “minimal” community spread.
Vaccine tracking is now being reported by the state, as of Wednesday, 10,137 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 11,007 doses of the Moderna vaccine have been administered to 21,144 total persons. Vaccine data does not include vaccine given to South Dakota Indian Reservations because that is federally allocated.
Wednesday, December 30
Eighteen new COVID-19 deaths were reported Wednesday by the South Dakota Department of Health.
The death toll is now at 1,464. There have been 518 deaths reported in December. The new deaths were 11 men and seven women listed in the following age ranges: 60-69 (4); 70-79 (7); 80+ (7).
On Wednesday, 562 new total coronavirus cases were announced bringing the state’s total case count to 98,720, up from Tuesday (98,158). Total recovered cases are now at 91,527, up from Tuesday (90,974).
Active cases are now at 5,729, down from Tuesday (5,738). South Dakota was last under 6,000 active cases on Oct. 12.
Current hospitalizations are at 293, down from Tuesday (303). Total hospitalizations are at 5,639, up from Tuesday (5,605).
Total persons negative is now at 272,739, up from Tuesday (272,001).
There were 1,300 new persons tested reported on Wednesday. Wednesday’s new person tested positivity rate is 43%.
The latest 7-day all test positivity rate reported by the DOH, is 16%. The DOH calculates that based on the results of the PCR test results but doesn’t release total numbers for how many PCR tests are done daily. The latest 1-day PCR test positivity rate is 19.1%.

More than 90,000 South Dakotans have recovered from COVID-19, while more than 500 new coronavirus cases and no new deaths were reported in Tuesday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health.
The death toll remained at 1,446. There have been 500 deaths reported in December.
On Tuesday, 501 new total coronavirus cases were announced bringing the state’s total case count to 98,158, up from Monday (97,657). Total recovered cases are now at 90,974, up from Monday (89,688).
Active cases are now at 5,738, up from Monday (6,523).
Current hospitalizations are at 303, up from Monday (288). Total hospitalizations are at 5,605, up from Monday (5,583).
Total persons negative is now at 272,001, up from Monday (271,612).
There were 890 new persons tested reported on Tuesday. Tuesday’s new person tested positivity rate is 56%.
The latest 7-day all test positivity rate reported by the DOH, is 15.2%. The DOH calculates that based on the results of the PCR test results but doesn’t release total numbers for how many PCR tests are done daily. The latest 1-day PCR test positivity rate is 19.8%.

Monday, December 28
The South Dakota Department of Health reported 267 new cases of COVID-19 Monday.
The state data shows that less than 1,000 people were tested.
The new case number is another decline in new cases in the state. There 427 new total coronavirus cases reported on Sunday. The new cases include 246 PCR tests and 21 antigen tests.
Active cases also decreased today. The state has 6,523 active cases compared to 6,695 on Sunday.
Deaths remain at 1,446.
Recovered cases increased to 89,249. The state has 97,657 total cases.
There are 288 people hospitalized and 5,583 ever hospitalized.
The DOH is also breaking down the dose of Pfizer and Moderna vaccinations.
So far, 9875 Pfizer doses have been administered to 9,875 individuals. 4,294 doses of Moderna have been administered to 4,294 individuals. The Moderna vaccination arrived after the Pfizer vaccine.
The total number of vaccine doses is at 14,799 with a total of 14,799 individuals receiving it.
Sunday, December 27
Active COVID-19 cases in South Dakota continued to decline along with a decrease in new persons tested for the virus in Sunday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health. Sunday’s update contained 48 hours worth of data from between 1 p.m. on Dec. 24 and 1 p.m. on Dec. 26 as there was no update due to Christmas.
The death toll remained at 1,446. There have been 500 deaths reported in December.
On Sunday, 427 new total coronavirus cases were reported in the past 48 hours bringing the state’s total case count to 97,390, up from Saturday’s update which included data from 1 p.m. Dec. 23 to 1 p.m. Dec. 24 (96,546).
Active cases decreased to 6,695 from Saturday’s update (7,089).
Current hospitalizations are at 274, down from Saturday’s update (289). Total hospitalized are now at 5,561, up from Saturday’s update (5,533).
Total persons tested negative is now at 271,395, up from Saturday’s update (270,818).
There were 1,004 new persons tested reported on Sunday, which included two reporting days. The 2-day new person test-positivity rate is 42.5% for Sunday.

Thursday, December 24
The coronavirus death toll increased by 41 on Thursday to 1,430, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.
There have been 484 deaths in December. Thursday’s total is among the top three in the month.
One of the new deaths was in the 20-29 range. Twenty-two of the new deaths were in the 80 plus range. Nine in the 70 plus, five in the 60-69, three in the 50-59 range and one in the 40-49 range
Hospitalizations were at 312. Down from Wednesday’s 337. Total hospitalizations reached 5,503 up from the 5,492 total on Wednesday.
There were at least 500 new cases. The state now has a total of 96,546 cases up from 96,040 on Wednesday. The state listed 372 PCR tests and 128 new antigen tests.
The state’s one day positivity rate was 16.7%.
Active cases are at 7,098 which is a decrease from Wednesday’s 7,314
Recovered cases increased to 88,018 from Wednesday’s 87,337.
Total persons tested negative is now at 269,964 an increase from Wednesday’s 269,086.
The DOH is also tracking vaccinations. As of Thursday, 8,398 persons had received a vaccine and 9,770 doses have been administered.

Eight new COVID-19 deaths were reported along with another drop in active coronavirus cases and current hospitalizations on Wednesday.
The death toll is now at 1,389. There have been 443 deaths reported in December.
In Wednesday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health, 531 new total coronavirus cases were reported bringing the state’s total case count to 96,040, up from Tuesday (95,509). Total recovered cases are now at 87,337, up from Tuesday (86,501).
Active cases are now at 7,314, up from Tuesday (7,627). South Dakota was last under 8,000 active cases on Oct. 17.

Thirty-nine new COVID-19 deaths were reported as the death toll hit 1,300 in South Dakota, according to Wednesday’s update from the state department of health.
New on Wednesday, the DOH is reporting deaths in two different categories — deaths among people with COVID-19 and deaths caused by COVID-19. On the state website, “deaths among people with COVID-19” is described by “reflects people who died with COVID-19, but COVID-19 may not have been the cause of death listed on the death certificate.”
The death toll is now at 1,300. There have been 354 deaths reported in December. The new deaths are 22 men and 17 women.
On Wednesday, 905 new total coronavirus cases were reported bringing the state’s total case count to 92,603, up from Tuesday (91,699). Total recovered cases are now at 80,316, up from Tuesday (78,919).
Active cases are now at 10,987, down from Tuesday (11,519). South Dakota hasn’t been under 11,000 active cases since late October.

Active COVID-19 cases in South Dakota continued to decline along with a decrease in new persons tested for the virus in Monday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health.
No new deaths were reported Monday as the death toll remained at 1,259. There have been 313 deaths reported in December.
On Monday, 316 new total coronavirus cases were reported bringing the state’s total case count to 91,354, up from Sunday (91,038). Total recovered cases are now at 77,472, up from Sunday (77,032).
Active cases are now at 12,623, down from Sunday (12,747). Until this weekend, South Dakota hasn’t been under 13,000 active cases since late October.

Two new COVID-19 deaths were reported along with a large decrease in active cases in Tuesday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health.
The death toll is now at 948. There were 531 deaths reported in November. Two new deaths were reported in the 80+ age range and one in the 70-79 age range. One previously reported death was removed from the 50-59 age range. KELOLAND News has reached out to the Department of Health for clarification and will update this story when the information is made available.
On Wednesday, the DOH said a previously reported death in the 50-59 age range was removed on Tuesday. The DOH says additional information was provided and the death was updated to the 70-79 age range. Two new deaths on Dec. 1 were 80+.

Fifty-four new COVID-19 deaths were reported, bringing the total to 942. There have been 527 deaths reported since Nov. 1. The new deaths were 23 women and 31 men listed in the following age ranges: 80+ (25); 70-79 (13); 60-69 (11); and 50-59 (5). The new deaths were listed in the following counties: Aurora (2), Beadle (1), Brown (1), Buffalo (2), Charles Mix (1), Codington (4), Davison (4), Day (2), Faulk (2), Grant (1), Gregory (1), Hamlin (1), Hanson (1), Hutchinson (1), Jackson (2), Lincoln (2), Minnehaha (11), Oglala Lakota (2), Pennington (4), Roberts (2), Tripp (2), Turner (2), Union (2) and Walworth (1).

The death toll rose to 888. There have been 473 deaths reported since Nov. 1. The new deaths were 20 women and 19 men listed in the following age ranges: 80+ (20), 70-79 (12), 60-69 (6) and 40-49 (1).
Friday’s update contained 48 hours worth of data instead of 24 hours because the DOH did not update the dashboard on Thanksgiving.

12 more South Dakotans have died from COVID-19, according to the latest update from the state department of health.
The death toll climbed to 415. The new deaths were four men and eight women. That makes 192 deaths in October, the deadliest month of the pandemic so far.
Active cases are now at 13,520, up from Thursday (12,462) and a new single-day record.
On Friday, 1,559 new coronavirus cases were announced, bringing the state’s total case count to 44,559, up from Thursday (43,000). There were 1,389 new PCR cases and 171 new antigen cases for 1,559 new total cases. Total recovered cases are now at 30,624, up from Thursday (30,135).
Total persons tested negative is now at 212,097, up from Thursday (210,514).
Current hospitalizations for COVID-19 are now at 403, down from Thursday (413). Total hospitalizations, which includes only South Dakota residents, is now at 2,660, up from Thursday (2,602).

Nineteen new COVID-19 deaths pushed South Dakota past 400 total deaths since the pandemic started, according to the latest update from the state department of health.
The death toll is now at 403. The new deaths were 11 women and eight men with 12 in the 80+ age range, three 70-79, three 60-69 and one 50-59. There’s been 180 deaths in October, the deadliest month of the pandemic so far.
On Thursday, 1,000 new coronavirus cases were announced, bringing the state’s total case count to 43,000, up from Wednesday (42,000). Total recovered cases are now at 30,135, up from Wednesday (29,683).
Active cases are now at 12,462, up from Wednesday (11,933) and a new single-day record.
Current hospitalizations for COVID-19 are now at 413, up from Wednesday (412). Total hospitalizations, which includes only South Dakota residents, is now at 2,602, up from Wednesday (2,545).
Total persons tested negative is now at 210,514, up from Wednesday (209,296).
There were 2,218 new persons tested reported on Thursday. The test-positivity rate for Thursday was 45 percent.

Nine new COVID-19 deaths as well as single-day records for active cases and current hospitalizations were reported in Wednesday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health.
The death toll increased to 384. In October, the deadliest month of the pandemic, there’s been 161 deaths in South Dakota. Wednesday’s new deaths were six men and three women with six in the 80+ age range, one in the 70-79 age range, one in the 60-69 age range and one 50-59 age range.
On Wednesday, 1,270 new coronavirus cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 42,000, up from Tuesday (40,730). Total recovered cases are now at 29,683, up from Tuesday (29,167).
Active cases are now at 11,933, up from Tuesday (11,188) and another single-day record. Two weeks ago, there were 6,604 active cases in South Dakota.
Current hospitalizations are at 412, up from Tuesday (395). Total hospitalizations are now at 2,545, up from Tuesday (2,483).
Total persons tested negative is now at 209,296, up from Tuesday (208,435).
There were 2,131 new persons tested reported on Wednesday. Wednesday’s test-positivity rate was nearly 60%.

South Dakota surpassed 40,000 total coronavirus cases on Tuesday and 395 people are currently hospitalized for COVID-19, according to the latest update from the state department of health.
On Tuesday, 989 new coronavirus cases were announced, bringing the state’s total case count to 40,730, up from Monday (39,741).
Active cases are at 11,188, up from Monday (11,061) and a new single-day record. The death toll remained at 375.
Current hospitalizations are at 395, up from Monday (377) at the highest it has been since the pandemic began. Total ever hospitalizations are now at 2,483, up from Monday (2,453).
Total persons tested negative is now at 208,435, up from Monday (207,353).
There were 2,071 new persons tested reported on Tuesday.

Active coronavirus cases and current hospitalizations for COVID-19 both increased in Monday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health.
On Monday, 538 new total cases were announced bringing the state’s total case count to 39,741, up from Sunday (39,203). Total recovered cases are now at 28,305, up from Sunday (28,083).
Active cases are at 11,061, up from Sunday (10,745). The death toll remained at 375.
Current hospitalizations are at 377, up from Sunday (366). Total hospitalizations, which includes only South Dakota residents, is at 2,453, up from Sunday (2,436).
There were 1,164 new persons tested reported on Monday.

Nine new COVID-19 deaths were announced along with a new active case count record in the latest update from the South Dakota Department of Health.
The death toll increased to 375. There have been 152 deaths in October, the deadliest month of the pandemic in South Dakota.
On Sunday, 1,063 new coronavirus cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 39,203, up from Saturday (38,141). The new deaths were three women and six men with one in the 70-79 age range and eight people in the 80+ age range. The new deaths were listed in the following counties: Davidson (3), Hughes, Jerauld, Minnehaha, Turner (2) and Ziebach.
On Tuesday, the DOH changed its website to not list new total cases on the SD overview tab of its dashboard. There were 1,017 new PCR cases and 46 new antigen cases announced for 1,063 new cases Sunday.

Ten new COVID-19 deaths were reported on Saturday as South Dakota surpassed more than 10,000 active COVID-19 cases in the state, according to the South Dakota Department of Health’s update.
The death toll increased to 366. There have been 143 deaths in October, the deadliest month of the pandemic in South Dakota. The new deaths were six women and four men with three in the 60-69 age range, two in the 70-79 age range and five in the 80+ age range. The new deaths were listed in the following counties: four in Jerauld (11), one in Lincoln (18), one in Meade (10), three in Minnehaha (105) and one in Todd (6).
On Saturday, 939 new coronavirus cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 38,141, up from Friday (37,202).

Nine new COVID-19 deaths were reported on Friday as South Dakota surpassed more than 1,000 new cases in a single-day, according to the South Dakota Department of Health’s update.
The death toll increased to 356. There have been 133 deaths in October, the deadliest month of the pandemic in South Dakota. The new deaths were five women and four men with five in the 70-79 age range, three in the 80+ age range and one in the 50-59 age range. The new deaths were listed in the following counties: two in Minnehaha (102), two in Pennington (49), one in Lincoln (17), one in Union (11), one in Gregory (10), one in Turner (9) and one in Jerauld (7).
On Friday, 1,185 new coronavirus cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 37,202, up from Thursday (36,017). It’s the first time new coronavirus cases have surpassed 1,000 in a single-day.

Active cases of COVID-19 in South Dakota surpassed 9,000 on Thursday, as 14 new deaths due to the virus were announced by the state department of health.
The death toll is now at 347 in South Dakota. There have been 124 deaths in October, the deadliest month of the pandemic. The new deaths were 12 women and two men listed in the 60-69 (2), 70-79 and 80+ (11) age ranges. The new deaths were listed in the following counties: Minnehaha (3), Pennington (3), Brookings (2), Davison, Gregory, Lawrence, Lyman, Walworth and Tripp.

Active COVID-19 cases and current hospitalizations from the virus both increased in the latest update from the South Dakota Department of Health.
On Monday, 567 new coronavirus cases were announced, bringing the state’s total case count to 33,836, up from Sunday (33,269). Total recovered cases are now at 25,125, up from Sunday (24,934).
Active cases, which surpassed 8,000 on Sunday, are now at 8,388. That number is another daily record.
The death toll remained at 323 with 100 deaths being recorded in October, the deadliest month of the pandemic.
Persons currently in the hospital is at 304, up from Sunday (300). Total persons hospitalized, which includes only S.D. residents, is at 2,146, up from Sunday (2,119).

After a slight “delay” in reporting new COVID-19 case counts, three more deaths were announced by the South Dakota Department of Health Friday afternoon.
On Friday, 793 new coronavirus cases were announced, bringing the state’s total case count to 31, 805 up from Thursday (31,012). Total recovered cases is now at 24,186, up from Thursday (23,576).
The death toll increased to 307. The three new deaths were all individuals 80 and older, two women and a man. The deaths are in the counties of Douglas, Minnehaha and Edmunds.
Active cases increased to 7,312 from Thursday’s 7,132.
There have been 84 deaths in October, the deadliest month of the pandemic so far.

The death toll increased to 258. Of the 10 new deaths reported, seven are men and three are women with three coming in the 80+ age range, four in the 70-79 age range and three and 60-69 age range. The new deaths were in the following counties: One in Beadle, two in Codington, one in Lake, one in Lincoln, one in Meade, two in Pennington, one in Turner and one in Union.
On Wednesday, there were 562 new confirmed coronavirus cases announced, bringing the state’s total to 25,906, up from Tuesday (24,876). Total recoveries are now at 21,137, up from Tuesday (20,449).

South Dakota has surpassed 4,000 active coronavirus cases as 11 new COVID-19 deaths were announced on Saturday by the state department of health.
On Saturday, 464 new coronavirus cases were announced, bringing the state’s total to 23,986, up from Friday (23,522). Recovered cases increased to 19,626, up 328 from Friday (19,298).
Active cases increased to 4,112 from Friday (3,987). The death toll increased to 248.
The death toll is now at 248. The new deaths were 8 men and 3 women listed in the 60-69 (3), 70-79 (3) and 80+ (5) age ranges. Thursday, October 1 – The South Dakota Department of Health experienced a reporting delay. Data was released at 2:30 p.m. State epidemiologist Dr. Joshua Clayton said a couple days worth of data were “injected” into Thursday’s report.
A daily-record total of 747 new positive coronavirus were announced Thursday. In addition to 747 new COVID-19 cases, DOH officials said there were 13 new deaths and 28 new hospitalizations.
Test results for the past 24 hours include 502 new positive cases; the other 245 cases are old results being added as of Thursday.
Active cases increased to 3,832, up from Wednesday (3,658).

On Monday, 187 new coronavirus cases were announced, bringing the state’s total positive case count to 13,509, up from Sunday (13,322). Recovered cases, someone no longer able to transmit the virus, is now at 10,612, up 101 from Sunday (10,511).
Active cases are now at 2,730, up from Sunday (2,644) and a new daily record.
Current hospitalizations are at 76, down from Sunday (78). Total hospitalizations, which are only South Dakota residents ever hospitalized by COVID-19, are now at 1,029, up from Sunday (1,017).

COVID-19 case numbers continue to climb on Sunday, after South Dakota reached new highs in the number of daily and active cases on Saturday.
According to the South Dakota Department of Health, there are 380 new positive coronavirus cases in the state. This brings the state’s total COVID-19 cases to 13,322, up from Saturday (12,942).
The death toll remains at 167.
Total recoveries is now at 10,511, 164 more than Saturday (10,347).
Active cases, which hit 2,000 on Thursday, went up to 2,644 on Sunday, 216 more than Saturday (2,428).
Current persons hospitalized is at 78, down from Saturday (79). Total hospitalizations are at 1,017, up from Saturday (1,006). Total persons tested negative is now at 132,329, up from Saturday (131,564).

The death toll is now at 165. The new deaths were two men and one woman listed in the 30-39, 50-59 and 80+ age ranges. The new deaths were reported in Clay County, Fall River County and Hughes County.
On Friday, 323 new positive coronavirus cases were announced, bringing the state’s total to 12,517, up from Thursday (12,194). Total recoveries is now at 10,170, 38 more than Thursday (10,032).
Active cases, which were at a state record of 2,000 on Thursday, went up to 2,182.

In the COVID-19 update from the South Dakota Department of Health on Thursday, they state the numbers released on August 27 include cases that were not reported on August 25-26 due to “a reporting aberration.”
There were 343 new positive COVID-19 cases announced on Thursday, bringing the state’s total to 12,194, up from Wednesday (11,571). Total recoveries, people who aren’t able to transmit the virus anymore, are now at 10,032, up 136 from Wednesday (9,896).
Active cases are at 2,000, up from Wednesday (1,513).
Current hospitalizations increased to 75, up 17 from Wednesday (58). Total hospitalizations increased to 983, up from Wednesday (981). In a change of reporting, the DOH says current hospitalizations now may include out-of-state cases. Total hospitalizations will only include South Dakota residents.

On Tuesday, there 80 new COVID-19 cases announced in South Dakota, bringing the state’s total to 11,505, up from Monday (11,425). Total recoveries are now at 9,814, up 120 from Monday (9,694).
Active cases increased/decreased to 1,530, from Monday (1,570).
Current hospitalizations are at 53, down from Monday (65). Total hospitalizations are at 974, up from Monday (965).

There were 216 new person test results reported on Tuesday. That’s the lowest amount of new tests reported since April 30.
When asked about the number of low test results reported, Derrick Haskins, a spokesman for the DOH, sent KELOLAND the statement below.
“We did have a lower than normal test volume yesterday with 327 total new tests reported. Among all persons tested, there were 216 new persons tested and 111 persons who were re-tested. Weekend testing volume has typically been lower, but we have also reviewed the manual and electronic reporting processes to ensure we continue to receive all laboratory reports.”

The death toll from COVID-19 in South Dakota rose by four on Saturday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health, bringing the total to 134 deaths.
Two of the deaths occurred in the 70-79 year old age range, while the other two deaths occurred in the 80+ age range. Two victims were from Pennington County, one from Union County and one from Brookings County. Three men and one woman were listed.
103 new positive cases were reported on Saturday, bringing the states total positive cases to 8,867. The number of recovered patients has increased to 7,820, up 59 from Friday. Active cases increased to 913, up 40. There were 36 current hospitalizations on Saturday, up five from Friday (31). The number of total hospitalizations increased to 832, up from Friday, (824).

The death toll from COVID-19 in South Dakota rose by one to 130, according to the latest report from the South Dakota Department of Health.
The new death was a Pennington County woman, listed in the 80+ age range. Minnehaha County has the most deaths with 63, while Pennington County now has the second-most with 27.
There were 80 new positive coronavirus cases announced on Friday, bringing the state’s total to 8,764, up from Thursday (8,685). The number of recovered patients has increased to 7,761, up 71 more than Thursday (7,690).
Active cases increased to 873, up from Thursday (866). There are now 31 current hospitalizations, down 13 from Thursday (44). The number of total hospitalizations increased to 824, up from Thursday (815).
The amount of negative persons tested is now at 102,871, up from Thursday (101,660). On Friday, a total of 1,291 new tests.

The South Dakota Department of Health reported a “delay in the daily data extraction” for Wednesday’s COVID-19 update.
The DOH announced reported cases data for Wednesday included results from 1 p.m. Monday, July 27 through 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 28 because of a delay in data extraction. Officials have said data is normally reported from one 24-hour time period — 1 p.m. to 1 p.m. — from the previous day.
Six new deaths were reported on Wednesday, bringing the state’s total to 129. All six new deaths were men. Three were listed 80+ age range, two were 60-69 age range and one 50-59 age range. One was listed in Minnehaha County, one in Lincoln County, one in Lyman County, one in Roberts County, one in Union County and Brown County.
There were 149 new positive coronavirus cases announced Wednesday, bringing the state’s total positive case count to 8,641, up from Tuesday (8,492). Total recoveries increased to 7,609, up 135 more than Tuesday (7,474).

On Monday, 49 new coronavirus cases were announced, bringing the state’s total positive case count to 8,444, up from Sunday (8,395). Total recoveries are now at 7,404, up 40 from Sunday (7,364).
Active cases increased to 917 from Sunday (908). Current hospitalizations are at 47, down from Sunday (48). Total hospitalizations are at 806, up from Sunday (801). The death toll remained at 123.
Total people testing negative changed from 98,531 on Sunday to 98,383. DOH officials said changes would be coming to the state’s website dashboard and planned to discuss them during Monday’s briefing.

South Dakota has 90 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, bringing the total to 8,395. The number of recoveries increased by 57 to 7,364, up from Saturday.
123 South Dakota residents have died from the coronavirus, according to the DOH. That’s one more than Saturday. The victim reported on Sunday was a man reported to be in the 70-79 age range from Todd County.
Active cases increased to 908 from Saturday. Total hospitalizations increased to 801, up from Saturday. 48 people are currently hospitalized.
There are now 98,531 negative persons tested, up from Saturday (97,608).
A total of 1,013 new test results were reported on Sunday.

The number of recoveries increased by 46 to 7,307, up from Friday. Minnehaha County saw the biggest case jump with 3,983 total positive cases on Saturday, up 42 from Friday.
The death toll remains at 122.

The death toll from the coronavirus increase by one up to 84, according to the latest COVID-19 testing results from the South Dakota Department of Health.
The new death was listed as a man in the age range 80+ in Minnehaha County. Minnehaha County has reported 55 COVID-19 deaths, while Pennington County is at 12.
On Wednesday, there were 66 new positive cases announced, bringing the state’s total to 6,419, up from Tuesday (6,353). There were 57 new recoveries for a new total of 5,554, up from Tuesday (5,497).

The two new deaths were listed as in the 80+ age range and 70-79 age range. One new death was male and one female. One was in Minnehaha County and one was in Pennington County.
There were 27 new positive cases announced, bring the state’s total to 6,353, up from Monday (6,326). Recoveries increased to 5,497 with 50 new recoveries announced Tuesday.

The death toll from COVID-19 increased to 39 on Tuesday when the latest test results were reported by the South Dakota Department of Health.
The five new deaths included one male and four females. One death was listed as age 30-39, the first in South Dakota listed in that age range. One was listed age 50-59, one was 60-69 and two were listed as 80-years old or older. All the new deaths were reported in Minnehaha County, which accounts for 34 deaths in the state.
Active cases in South Dakota decreased to 1,315, down 78 from Monday (1,393).
Total positive cases are at 3,663, up 49 from Monday (3,614). Total recoveries are at 2,309, up 122 from Monday (2,187). There were 73 more recoveries than new positive cases announced Tuesday.

The latest COVID-19 test result numbers from Saturday show the state with 34 total deaths in the state, up three from Friday. The three new deaths reported are all in Minnehaha County, one male and two females. One patient was between the age of 70-79 years old. Two patients were 80+ years old.
There were a total of 3,393 positive cases in the state. That’s up 249 over Friday. There are 1,234 active cases (an increase of 190 over Friday) and 2,125 recovered patients, which is up 56 from Friday.
Of the 249 new cases in the state, 232 cases are reported in Minnehaha County.
79 patients are in the hospital, up from Friday. Overall, 253 people have had to be hospitalized.

22 new cases have been reported in South Dakota as of Sunday at 11:30 a.m., bringing the total to 90 COVID-19 cases. There are now 3,127 negative tests and 1 pending. Recovered patients are now up to 29.
There are 45 males and 45 females who have tested positive for COVID-19 in South Dakota.
Saturday, March 28
There are 10 new positive cases of COVID-19 in South Dakota on Saturday, bringing the total to 68. Recoveries also went up to 26 from 21 on Friday.
Negative tests, which now include tests by the public health lab and private labs, went all the way up to 2,592. There are now 21 cases in Minnehaha County. Beadle County remains the same as Friday, with 16 cases.
Friday, March 27
Positive cases in South Dakota went up to 58, which is 12 more from Thursday (46). Recoveries also went up to 21 from 16 on Thursday.
Minnehaha County moved to 18 confirmed cases, the most in South Dakota. Beadle County is second with 16 positive cases. The largest age group is 50 to 59 with 16 positive cases.
Thursday, March 26
Five new positive cases of COVID-19 and three new recoveries were released by the state health department on Thursday. That brought the total number of positive cases to 46, while the number of recoveries went to 16.
Negative tests, which now include tests by the public health lab and private labs, went all the way up to 1,973 from 819 the day before. There are still 125 pending tests.
Positive COVID-19 cases have been found in 14 counties.
Wednesday, March 25
On Wednesday, South Dakota announced its first double-digit jump in positive COVID-19 cases, while the number of recovered cases increased to 13.
There were 11 new positive cases, making the total for the state 41. There are still 268 pending tests and 819 negative tests.
Minnehaha County increased to 13 total cases, tying Beadle County for the most confirmed cases in the state.
The new cases also pushed Minnehaha County into the substantial category for community transmission or impact. Lincoln County and McCook County each moved to minimal/moderate transmission or impact.
Tuesday, March 24
The state announced two new positive COVID-19 cases in South Dakota. One is in Beadle County, an area with substantial community transmission of the virus, according to CDC definitions. The other case is from Brookings County.
Two more people have recovered, bringing that total to eight so far. Negative test results went up to 790 and pending cases was at 268.
Monday, March 23
For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, officials released new test results in less than 24 hours.
Gov. Kristi Noem (R-S.D.) reported seven new positive cases of COVID-19 on Monday morning. That moved the amount of positive cases in South Dakota to a total of 28.
There were still 265 pending cases in the South Dakota Public Health Lab and more pending cases at a commercial test lab. The amount of negative tests is 762. The state also announced six cases had successfully recovered from COVID-19.
Three new counties — Codington, Hughes and Lyman — each reported their first positive case of COVID-19. Beadle County led South Dakota with 12 positive cases.
Beadle County also reached the CDC level of “Substantial” which means there are five or more cases of community-acquired COVID-19 in a county. Hughes and Lyman were moved to “Minimal to Moderate” which means there was one single case of community-acquired COVID-19.
Sunday, March 22
The positive COVID-19 cases numbers jumped to 21 in South Dakota.
Six of the positive results are people in Beadle County:

- Female, 50-59 years old
- Female, 20-29 years old
- Male, 20-29 years old
- Female, 10-19 years old
- Male, 10-19 years old
The seventh positive test is in a man from Brown County, between 60-69 years old. The state says that case is travel related.
Saturday, March 21
With no new positive cases reported, there have been 14 cases since Thursday. However, there are now 691 negative cases and 268 pending cases in South Dakota.
Friday, March 20
Governor Kristi Noem said there were no new COVID-19 cases in South Dakota as of Friday. The case number continues to be 14 cases including one death.
Thursday, March 19
There were 94 tests were run Thursday. Out of those 94, three tested positive. Two of the new positive cases are men and one is a woman. The age range is from 30-69. All are from Beadle County.
Wednesday, March 18
The state shared no new positive or negative cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, but the number of pending cases increased to 350. That’s ten times the number of cases on Tuesday, which was reported at 35.
Tuesday, March 17
As of 11:30 a.m., the South Dakota Department of Health reports 11 positive cases in the state. The latest patient is a woman from Minnehaha County between 50 – 59 years old. There are 551 negative cases and 35 pending cases in the state.
Monday, March 16
On Monday, the state’s confirmed COVID-19 cases went up to 10 total. One new positive case was announced by the Department of Health. The new positive case is in Minnehaha County. The person is a man in his 20s. The state also announced the number of negative tests climbed to 494 and zero pending cases.
Sunday, March 15
The South Dakota Department of Health posted Sunday that there have been no new positive cases in the state. However, the number of negative tests went from 182 on Saturday to 327 on Sunday, with 6 cases pending.
Saturday, March 14
South Dakota’s Department of Health announced there were no new positive cases. The negative tests climbed to 182, with three cases pending.
Friday, March 13
The Department of Health updated numbers with one new positive case and 46 negative tests and 11 pending tests. The new positive case came from McCook County.
Thursday, March 12
No new positive or negative test results were announced. Gov. Kristi Noem announced there were 41 pending tests.
Wednesday, March 11
Gov. Noem announced there were three more COVID-19 positive tests. Two were in Minnehaha County and one in Bon Homme County.
Tuesday, March 10
The first positive test results were released by Gov. Noem in the afternoon. Tuesday, officials reported five presumptive positive COVID-19 cases including one death linked to the strain of Coronavirus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said presumptive positive cases are to be treated as if they are confirmed cases.
The cause of death for a 60 to 69 year old Pennington County man was confirmed to be COVID-19. The state says he had spent the two weeks prior to his death in Davison County and he had underlying medical conditions.
Three men — one from Beadle County, one from Charles Mix County and one from Minnehaha County — were announced. One woman from Davison County was announced as well.
Previous COVID-19 testing coverage
On March 9, KELOLAND.com digital reporter Michael Geheren reported South Dakota had 1,900 tests available, according to a DOH spokesman. At that time, that was enough to test 900 people because each patient tested for coronavirus typically received two tests: a nose swab and throat swab. The testing guidelines from the CDC changed twice since March 9.
On March 13, the CDC recommended to collect and test a single nose swab. On March 17, the guidelines updated the description of how to collect an accurate nasal swab. The CDC also recommended testing of “lower respiratory tract specimens.”
On testing capacity, the South Dakota Public Health Laboratory (SDPHL) was able to run tests for medium and high-risk patients on Monday, March 16. However, the SDPHL did not receive additional supplies as expected to run tests beyond March 16.
Testing at the state lab restarted on March 19.
Avera announced on March 23 Avera’s Institute for Human Genetics worked closely with the state health department to establish guidelines on how pending tests are processed. Avera’s lab will allow the state to process an additional 200 tests per day.
Sanford also announced testing on March 23. Sanford’s projects to process nearly 400 tests per day, with plans to double capacity in the coming weeks. Sanford also promised faster results, within 24-48 hours.
On March 26, Secretary of Health Kim Malsam-Rysdon said South Dakota could process nearly 800 tests in one day with the Avera, Sanford labs in Sioux Falls and the public health lab in Pierre.
Malsam-Rysdon said the state needed to be “good stewards with the resources they have” with who would get tested. Gov. Noem said there are protocols for who gets tested and she wasn’t going to second guess who gets a test and who doesn’t.
Malsam-Rysdon also said recovered means people don’t have symptoms and they have been fever-free for at least 72 hours. Recovered people have also isolated for enough time to not be at-risk of spreading the disease.
KELOLAND News also asked state epidemiologist Joshua Clayton whether a recovered patient can contract COVID-19 again. Clayton said the CDC’s understanding of COVID-19 was still at a very low level overall but individuals are “not expected” to be infected with COVID-19 a second time.
