There were 396 new total COVID-19 cases reported on Friday, bringing the state’s total case count to 154,482, up from Thursday (154,086).

One new COVID-19 death was reported in Friday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health.

The death toll from COVID-19 is at 2,235, up 1 from Thursday (2,234). The death was a man in Brookings County in the 50-59 age range.

The number of active cases reported on Friday is at 5,421, up from Thursday (5,393).

Current hospitalizations are at 187, down from Thursday (204). Total hospitalizations are at 7,839, up from Thursday (7,814).

Total recovered cases are now at 146,826, up from Thursday (146,459). The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 13.2% for October 20-26.

The DOH currently reports total tests each day. There have been 1,603,898 total tests reported as of Friday, up 4,072 from 1,599,826 total tests reported as of Thursday.

Of South Dakota’s 66 counties, 56 are listed as having “high” or “substantial” community spread. “High” community spread is 100 cases or greater per 100,000 or a 10% or greater PCR test positivity rate.

There have been 640 Delta variant cases (B.1.617.2, AY.1-AY.25) detected in South Dakota through sentinel monitoring.

There have been 172 cases of the B.1.1.7 (Alpha variant), three cases of P.1. (Gamma variant) and two cases of the B.1.351 (Beta variant).

The DOH announced changes to how it reports vaccinations on the COVID-19 dashboard as of Monday, October 14. It now includes a breakout of how many people have received booster doses. As of Friday, 67.33% of the population 12-years-old and above has received at least one dose while 57.97% have completed the vaccination series.

There have been 509,733 doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered, 348,866 of the Moderna vaccine and 30,396 doses of the Janssen vaccine.

There have been 153,415 persons who have completed two doses of Moderna. There have been 179,960 persons who have received two doses of Pfizer.

As for booster doses, 42,892 people have received a 3rd Pfizer shot and 9,761 have received a 3rd Moderna dose.


October 28

There were 312 new total COVID-19 cases reported on Thursday, bringing the state’s total case count to 154,086, up from Wednesday (153,774).

Three new COVID-19 deaths were reported in Thursday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health.

The death toll from COVID-19 is at 2,234, up from Wednesday (2,231). The new deaths include one woman and two men, all in the 80+ age group.

The number of active cases reported on Thursday is at 5,393, down from Wednesday (5,464).

Current hospitalizations are at 204, up from Wednesday (199). Total hospitalizations are at 7,814, up from Wednesday (7,801).

Total recovered cases are now at 146,459, up from Wednesday (146,079). The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 13.1% for October 20–26.

There were 718 new total COVID-19 cases reported on Tuesday, bringing the state’s total case count to 153,321, up from Monday (152,603).

Eight new COVID-19 deaths were reported in Tuesday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health.

The death toll from COVID-19 is at 2,228, up from Monday (2,220). The new deaths include five men and three women in the following age groups: 60-69 (4); 70-79 (2); 80+(2). Deaths were reported in the following counties: Beadle (1), Butte (1), Fall River (1), Harding (1), Hyde (1), Minnehaha (2) and Pennington (1)

October 25

Two new COVID-19 deaths were reported in Monday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health.

The death toll from COVID-19 is at 2,220, up from Friday (2,218). The two new deaths were both men in the 60-69 age range in Beadle County and Hughes County.

There were 295 new total COVID-19 cases reported on Monday, bringing the state’s total case count to 152,603, up from Friday (152,308).

The number of active cases reported on Monday is at 5,625, down from Friday (5,663).

Current hospitalizations are at 179, down from Friday (215). Total hospitalizations are at 7,757, up from Friday (7,751).

Total recovered cases are now at 144,758, up from Friday (144,427). The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 12.8% for October 15–21.

The death toll from COVID-19 is at 2,202, up from Friday (2,189). The deaths include eight men and five women in the following age ranges: 40-49 (1); 50-59 (1); 60-69 (4); 70-79 (5); 80+(2). There were four deaths in Minnehaha County, two in Lawrence County and one each in Codington, Grant, Meade, Oglala Lakota, Pennington, Turner and Yankton Counties.

The number of active cases reported on Friday is at 5,868, down from 5,963 reported on Thursday.

There were 341 new total COVID-19 cases reported on Thursday, bringing the state’s total case count to 149,678, up from Wednesday (149,337).

While the difference in the total case count reported Thursday and Wednesday equals 341, when you add the PCR, or newly confirmed, cases (267) and antigen, or new probable, cases (75), there were 342 new cases.

The number of active cases reported on Thursday is at 5,963, down from Wednesday (6,089).

The death toll from COVID-19 is at 2,182, up from Wednesday (2,177). Five new deaths include four men and one woman in the following age groups: 1 in the 60-69 age group, 3 in the 70-79 age group and 1 in the 80+ age group.

Current hospitalizations are at 201, down from Wednesday (207). Total hospitalizations are at 7,646, up from Wednesday (7,629).

As of Thursday, 65.79% of the population 12-years-old and above has received at least one dose while 56.86% have completed the vaccination series.

There have been 481,026 doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered, 336,569 of the Moderna vaccine and 29,451 doses of the Janssen vaccine.

There have been 158,593 persons who have completed two doses of Moderna. There have been 194,022 persons who have received two doses of Pfizer.

As for booster doses, 24,348 people have received a 3rd Pfizer shot and 2,800 have received a 3rd Moderna dose.

There were 1,088 new total COVID-19 cases reported on Wednesday, bringing the state’s total case count to 149,337, up from Tuesday (148,249).

According to Secretary of Health Kim Malsam-Rysdon, the Wednesday update includes case data for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The number of active cases reported on Wednesday is at 6,089, down from Tuesday (6,539).

The death toll from COVID-19 remains at 2,177, the same as Tuesday.

Current hospitalizations are at 207, up from Tuesday (202). Total hospitalizations are at 7,629, up from Tuesday (7,572).

Total recovered cases are now at 141,071, up from Tuesday (139,533). The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 14.0% for October 5 – 11.

There were 429 new total COVID-19 cases reported on Tuesday, bringing the state’s total case count to 148,249, up from Friday (147,820).

According to Secretary of Health Kim Malsam-Rysdon, the Tuesday update this week reflects case numbers from Thursday at 1 p.m. through Friday at 1 p.m. from last week. The Wednesday update will include Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

More than 350 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Friday’s update from the South Dakota Department of Health.

There were 351 new total COVID-19 cases reported on Friday, bringing the state’s total case count to 147,820, up from Thursday (147,469). While the difference in the total case count reported Friday and Thursday equals 351, when you add the PCR, or newly confirmed, cases (292) and antigen, or new probable, cases (60), there were 352 new cases. 

The number of active cases is at 6,589, down from Thursday (6,716).

The death toll from COVID-19 is now at 2,171, up from Thursday (2,170). The death is a Pennington County woman in the 80+ age range.

Current hospitalizations are at 213, the same as Thursday (213). Total hospitalizations are now at 7,548, up from Thursday (7,531).

The number of active cases went down to 6,716 from Wednesday (6,735).

The death toll from COVID-19 is now at 2,170, up three from Wednesday (2,167). The deaths were three men in the following age ranges: 30-39 (1); 40-49 (1) and 60-69 (1).

Current hospitalizations are at 213, down from Wednesday (221). Total hospitalizations are now at 7,531, up from Wednesday (7,514).

Total recovered cases are now at 138,583, up from Wednesday (138,093). The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 14.1% for Sept. 29 through Oct. 5.

The death toll from COVID-19 is now at 2,167, up six from Tuesday (2,161). The deaths include four men and two women in the following age ranges: 2 in the 50-59 age group, 3 in the 60-69 age group, 1 in the 80+ age group.

Current hospitalizations are at 221, up from Tuesday (220). Total hospitalizations are now at 7,514, up from Tuesday (7,496).
