January 31

The South Dakota Department of Health reported 13 new COVID-19 deaths Monday.

The COVID-19 death toll is now at 2,650, up from Friday (2,637). The new deaths were 10 men and three women in the following age ranges: 40-49 (1), 50-59 (2), 60-69 (2), 70-75 (5) and 80+ (3).

All 66 of South Dakota’s 66 counties are listed as having “high” community spread. “High” community spread is 100 cases or greater per 100,000 or a 10% or greater PCR test positivity rate.

There are now 393 people hospitalized due to COVID-19, down from Friday (411). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,992 total people who have been hospitalized.

The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 35.8% for Jan. 21 – 27.

On Monday, there were 1,030 total new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 226,413, up from Friday (225,383). That total does not include at-home positive results as those are not required to be reported to the state.

Active cases are now at 32,239, down from 33,647 on Friday.

The number of recovered cases is at 191,524.

The number of Delta and Omicron variant cases each rose in the state Monday. There’s now 271 Omicron cases, up from 264 reported on Friday.

There have been 1,329 Delta variant cases (B.1.617.2 and AY lineages) detected in South Dakota through sentinel monitoring, an increase of two. There have been 176 cases of the B.1.1.7 (Alpha variant), four cases of P.1. (Gamma variant) and two cases of the B.1.351 (Beta variant).

On November 24, the South Dakota Department of Health updated how it reports the percent of the population getting vaccinated. To align with the vaccine-eligible population, the Department of Health is including children who are 5-11 years old.

For COVID-19 vaccines, 69.61% the population 5-years-old and above has received at least one dose while 56.88% have completed the vaccination series. For booster doses, 30.15% of those eligible have completed their booster dose.

There have been 646,886 doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered, 453,964 of the Moderna vaccine and 36,670 doses of the Janssen vaccine.

There have been 170,450 persons who have completed two doses of Moderna. There have been 248,981 persons who have received two doses of Pfizer.

As for booster doses, 108,958 people have received a 3rd Pfizer shot, 83,851 people have received a 3rd Moderna dose and 2,480 have received a Janssen booster.

January 28

According to the South Dakota Department of Health, there are currently 33,647 active cases of COVID-19 in the state, down from 34,753 on Thursday.

With nine new deaths reported on Friday, the death toll is now at 2,637. The deaths include four men and five women in the following age ranges: 30-39 (1); 60-69 (2); 70-79 (2); and 80+ (4). The following counties reported additional deaths: 2 in Brookings, 2 in Lincoln, 3 in Minnehaha, 1 each in Brown and Codington.

There are now 411 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Friday, up from Thursday (404). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,939 total people who have been hospitalized.

The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 37.1% for Jan. 20 – 26.

On Friday, 1,145 total new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 225,383, up from Thursday (224,238). That total does not include at-home positive results as those are not required to be reported to the state.

The number of recovered cases is at 189,099.

All 66 of South Dakota’s 66 counties are listed as having “high” community spread. “High” community spread is 100 cases or greater per 100,000 or a 10% or greater PCR test positivity rate.

On Friday, the number of Omicron cases in the state is at 264, up from 193 reported on Thursday.

There have been 1,327 Delta variant cases (B.1.617.2 and AY lineages) detected in South Dakota through sentinel monitoring, an increase of seven. There have been 176 cases of the B.1.1.7 (Alpha variant), four cases of P.1. (Gamma variant) and two cases of the B.1.351 (Beta variant).

For COVID-19 vaccines, 69.56% the population 5-years-old and above has received at least one dose while 56.84% have completed the vaccination series. For booster doses, 30.05% of those eligible have completed their booster dose.

There have been 645,921 doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered, 453,538 of the Moderna vaccine and 36,642 doses of the Janssen vaccine.

There have been 170,400 persons who have completed two doses of Moderna. There have been 248,743 persons who have received two doses of Pfizer.

As for booster doses, 108,569 people have received a 3rd Pfizer shot, 83,568 people have received a 3rd Moderna dose and 2,469 have received a Janssen booster.

January 27

According to the South Dakota Department of Health, there are currently 34,753 active cases of COVID-19 in the state, down from 35,534 on Wednesday.

With five new deaths reported on Thursday, the death toll is now at 2,628. The deaths include two men and three women in the following age ranges: 60-69 (3) and 80+ (2).

There are now 404 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Thursday, up from Wednesday (396). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,898 total people who have been hospitalized.

The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 37.9% for Jan. 19 – 25.

On Thursday, 1,358 total new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 224,238, up from Wednesday (222,880). That total does not include at-home positive results as those are not required to be reported to the state.

The number of recovered cases is at 186,857.

On Thursday, the number of Omicron cases in the state is at 193.

There have been 645,074 doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered, 453,101 of the Moderna vaccine and 36,626 doses of the Janssen vaccine.

January 26

According to the South Dakota Department of Health, there are currently 35,534 active cases of COVID-19 in the state, down from 36,155 on Tuesday.

With 14 new deaths reported on Wednesday, the death toll is now at 2,623. The deaths include eight women and six men in the following age ranges: 50-59 (2); 60-69 (6); 70-79 (3); 80+ (3). Deaths were reported in the following counties: Clay (1), Edmunds (1), Fall River (2), Lawrence (1), Minnehaha (5), Oglala Lakota (1), Pennington (2), Roberts (1), Yankton (1). A death was removed from the Hughes County total.

There are now 396 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Wednesday, down from Tuesday (423). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,845 total people who have been hospitalized.

The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 39.3% for Jan. 18 – 24.

On Wednesday, 1,508 total new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 222,880, up from Tuesday (221,372). That total does not include at-home positive results as those are not required to be reported to the state.

The number of recovered cases is at 184,723.

On Wednesday, the number of Omicron cases in the state is at 151.

There have been 1,319 Delta variant cases (B.1.617.2 and AY lineages) detected in South Dakota through sentinel monitoring. There have been 176 cases of the B.1.1.7 (Alpha variant), four cases of P.1. (Gamma variant) and two cases of the B.1.351 (Beta variant).

For COVID-19 vaccines, 69.40% the population 5-years-old and above has received at least one dose while 56.73% have completed the vaccination series. For booster doses, 29.80% of those eligible have completed their booster dose.

There have been 644,312 doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered, 452,710 of the Moderna vaccine and 36,606 doses of the Janssen vaccine.

There have been 170,292 persons who have completed two doses of Moderna. There have been 248,310 persons who have received two doses of Pfizer.

January 25

According to the South Dakota Department of Health, there are currently 36,155 active cases of COVID-19 in the state, down from 36,247 on Monday.

With three new deaths reported on Tuesday, the death toll is now at 2,609. The deaths include two women and one man in the following age ranges: 60-69 (1); 80+ (2). Deaths were reported in Brown (1) and Minnehaha (2) Counties.

There are now 423 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Tuesday, up from Monday (392). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,806 total people who have been hospitalized.

The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 40.3% for Jan. 17 – 23.

On Tuesday, 2,829 total new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 221,372, up from Monday (218,543). That total does not include at-home positive results as those are not required to be reported to the state.

The number of recovered cases is at 182,608.

All 66 of South Dakota’s 66 counties are listed as having “high” community spread. “High” community spread is 100 cases or greater per 100,000 or a 10% or greater PCR test positivity rate.

On Tuesday, the number of Omicron cases in the state is at 151, up two from the previous report.

For COVID-19 vaccines, 69.35% the population 5-years-old and above has received at least one dose while 56.70% have completed the vaccination series. For booster doses, 29.71% of those eligible have completed their booster dose.

There have been 643,428 doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered, 452,280 of the Moderna vaccine and 36,592 doses of the Janssen vaccine.

There have been 170,244 persons who have completed two doses of Moderna. There have been 248,107 persons who have received two doses of Pfizer.

January 24

According to the South Dakota Department of Health, there are currently 36,247 active cases of COVID-19 in the state, up from 35,196 on Friday.

With five new deaths reported on Monday, the death toll is now at 2,606. The new deaths include four men and one women in the following age ranges: 70-79 (2) and 80+ (3). New deaths were reported in the following counties: Bon Homme, Brown, Davison, Edmunds and Minnehaha.

There are now 392 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Monday, down from Friday (397). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,713 total people who have been hospitalized.

The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 41% for Jan. 14 – 20.

On Monday, 1,887 total new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 218,543, up from Friday (216,656). That total does not include at-home positive results as those are not required to be reported to the state.

The number of recovered cases is at 179,690.

January 21

According to the South Dakota Department of Health, there are currently 35,196 active cases of COVID-19 in the state, up from 34,086 on Thursday.

With 19 new deaths reported on Friday, the death toll is now at 2,601. The new deaths include nine men and 10 women in the following age ranges: 50-59 (3); 60-69 (9); 70-79 (4); 80+ (3).

There are now 397 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Friday, down from Thursday (403). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,662 total people who have been hospitalized.

The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 40.9% for Jan. 13 – 19.

On Friday, 2,183 total new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 216,656, up from Thursday (214,473). That total does not include at-home positive results as those are not required to be reported to the state.

According to the South Dakota Department of Health, there are currently 34,086 active cases of COVID-19 in the state, up from 32,761 on Wednesday. That’s an increase of 1,325 over the previous day and sets a new record high in South Dakota.

With nine new deaths reported on Thursday, the death toll is now at 2,582. The new deaths include eight men and one woman in the following age ranges: 50-59 (1); 60-69 (2); 70-79 (3); 80+ (4).

There are now 403 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Thursday, up from Wednesday (392). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,618 total people who have been hospitalized.

The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 40.9% for Jan. 12 – 18.

On Thursday, 2,588 total new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 214,473, up from Wednesday (211,885). That total does not include at-home positive results as those are not required to be reported to the state.

January 19

According to the South Dakota Department of Health, there are currently 32,761 active cases of COVID-19 in the state, up from 28,813 on Tuesday.

The numbers reported on Wednesday include data from Friday, January 14 at 1 p.m. to Tuesday, January 18 at 1 p.m.

With 13 new deaths reported on Wednesday, the death toll is now at 2,573. The new deaths include eight men and five women. New deaths were reported in the following age ranges: 30-39 (1); 50-59 (3); 60-69 (1); 70-79 (3); 80+ (5).

On Wednesday, the number of Omicron cases in the state is at 112, up from 27.

There have been 1,312 Delta variant cases (B.1.617.2, AY.1-AY.25) detected in South Dakota through sentinel monitoring. There have been 176 cases of the B.1.1.7 (Alpha variant), four cases of P.1. (Gamma variant) and two cases of the B.1.351 (Beta variant).

For COVID-19 vaccines, 69.07% the population 5-years-old and above has received at least one dose while 56.52% have completed the vaccination series. For booster doses, 29.13% of those eligible have completed their booster dose.

There have been 638,275 doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered, 449,904 of the Moderna vaccine and 36,457 doses of the Janssen vaccine.

January 18

A second child death from COVID-19 has been reported by the South Dakota Department of Health.

With one new death reported on Tuesday, the death toll is now at 2,560. The death is a male in the 0-9 age group from Minnehaha County.

South Dakota reported its first child death from COVID-19 last week; the DOH says it was a baby under the age of one from Pennington County.

There are now 348 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Tuesday, down from Friday (349). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,458 total people who have been hospitalized.

The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 38.6% for Jan. 10 – 16.

On Tuesday, 2,265 total new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 205,402, up from Friday (203,137). That total does not include at-home positive results as those are not required to be reported to the state.

The active case count is at 28,813, up from Friday (26,835). Total recovered cases are now at 174,029, up from Friday (173,743).

There have been 1,294 Delta variant cases (B.1.617.2, AY.1-AY.25) detected in South Dakota through sentinel monitoring, an increase of eight over the previous report. There have been 176 cases of the B.1.1.7 (Alpha variant), four cases of P.1. (Gamma variant) and two cases of the B.1.351 (Beta variant).

The number of Omicron cases is at 27, up three over the previous report. On Dec. 22, the state reported its first Omicron variant case in a man in his 20s from Minnehaha County.

For COVID-19 vaccines, 68.79% the population 5-years-old and above has received at least one dose while 56.39% have completed the vaccination series. For booster doses, 28.70% of those eligible have completed their booster dose.

There have been 634,490 doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered, 448,433 of the Moderna vaccine and 36,286 doses of the Janssen vaccine.

January 14

There are now 349 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Friday, up from Thursday (343). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,411 total people who have been hospitalized.

With 15 new deaths reported on Friday, the death toll is now at 2,559. The new deaths include eight men and seven women. New deaths were reported in the following age ranges: 40-49 (1); 50-59 (1); 60-69 (6); 70-79 (4); 80+ (3). Counties reporting new deaths include: Buffalo (1); Butte (1); Dewey (1); Fall River (2); Jackson (1); Mellette (1); Minnehaha (2); Pennington (2); Spink (1); Stanley (1); Todd (1); Yankton (1).

The number of Omicron cases is at 27, up three over the previous report. On Dec. 22, the state reported its first Omicron variant case in a man in his 20s from Minnehaha County.

For COVID-19 vaccines, 68.68% the population 5-years-old and above has received at least one dose while 56.35% have completed the vaccination series. For booster doses, 28.48% of those eligible have completed their booster dose.

January 13

There are now 343 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Thursday, up from Wednesday (336). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,381 total people who have been hospitalized.

With 10 new deaths reported on Thursday, the death toll is now at 2,544. While the difference in total deaths between Wednesday and Thursday is 10, the number of male deaths reported went up by 12 and there were four deaths added to the total for female. New deaths were reported in the following age ranges: 50-59 (2); 60-69 (3); 70-79 (3); 80+ (2). The following counties reported deaths: Bon Homme (2); Brown (1); Hughes (1); Lake (2); Minnehaha (2); Pennington (1); Sanborn (1).

South Dakota reported its first COVID-19 death in the 0-9 age range on Wednesday, according to data from the state health department.

The active case count is at 24,796, up from Wednesday (22,743). Total recovered cases are now at 173,156, up from Wednesday (172,635).

January 12

For the first time since the pandemic began, South Dakota is reporting the death of a child with COVID-19.

South Dakota reported its first COVID-19 death in the 0-9 age range on Wednesday, according to data from the state health department.

There were six new deaths reported on Wednesday, bringing the death toll 2,534. Along with the 0-9 age range death, new deaths were five males and one woman in the following age ranges: 40-49, 60-67 (3) and 80+.

There are now 336 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Wednesday, up from Tuesday (315). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,343 total people who have been hospitalized.

The active case count is at 22,743, up from Tuesday (20,475). Total recovered cases are now at 172,635, up from Tuesday (172,201).

The number of Omicron cases is at 23. On Dec. 22, the state reported its first Omicron variant case in a man in his 20s from Minnehaha County.

For COVID-19 vaccines, 68.55% the population 5-years-old and above has received at least one dose while 56.26% have completed the vaccination series. For booster doses, 28.19% of those eligible have completed their booster dose.

There have been 630,303 doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered, 446,338 of the Moderna vaccine and 36,134 doses of the Janssen vaccine.

There have been 169,684 persons who have completed two doses of Moderna. There have been 245,588 persons who have received two doses of Pfizer.

As for booster doses, 101,254 people have received a 3rd Pfizer shot, 79,241 have received a 3rd Moderna dose and 2,308 have received a Janssen booster.

January 11

The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 33.3% for Jan. 3 – 9 as the number of South Dakotans with an active case of COVID-19 went up by more than 3,000.

There are 315 people hospitalized as of Tuesday, up from Monday (307). Throughout the pandemic, there have been 9,316 total people who have been hospitalized.

On Tuesday, 4,110 total new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 195,204 up from Monday (191,094).

The active case count is at 20,475, up from Monday (17,219).

There were no new deaths reported on Tuesday, so the death toll remains at 2,528.

Total recovered cases are now at 172,201, up from Monday (171,347).

The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is Dec. 31 through Jan. 6 is 31.1%.

There were six new deaths reported on Monday. The death toll is 2,528.

The deaths are in five men and one woman in the following age ranges: 1 each in the 60 -69 age range and 70-79 range and four in the 80+ range. The deaths were in these counties: Brule, Lincoln (2), Pennington (2) and Todd.

There are 307 people hospitalized with 9,250 total people who have been hospitalized.

On Monday, 1,683 total new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 191,094 up from Friday (189,411).

The active case count increased to 17,219 from 15,927 on Friday. The last time active cases were in the 17,000 range, was November 30, 2020 at 17,184.

There were two new COVID-19 deaths reported by the Department of Health on Friday. The statewide death toll increased to 2,522.

The deaths are two men in the following age groups: 60-69 (1), 80+ (1). New deaths were reported in Lincoln and Walworth Counties.

On Friday, 1,944 total new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the state’s total case count to 189,411 up from Thursday (187,467).

The number of active cases reported on Friday is at 15,927, up from Thursday (14,355).

Current hospitalizations are at 301, down from Thursday (305). Total hospitalizations are at 9,228 up from Thursday (9,199).

Total recovered cases are now at 170,962, up from Thursday (170,592).

One in four COVID-19 tests reported to the South Dakota Department of Health came back positive for the virus over the past seven days.

The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 25.5% for Dec. 27 – Jan. 2.

Tuesday’s dashboard update reflects case numbers from 1 p.m. Thursday (12/30) – 1 p.m. Monday (1/3), according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

There were four new COVID-19 deaths reported by the Department of Health on Tuesday. The statewide death toll increased to 2,498. The new deaths include three woman and one man in the following age ranges: 50-59 (1); 60-69 (1); 80+(2). These counties each reported one new death: Davison, Hutchinson, Fall River and Lincoln.
