At Home Teeth Whitening

Heading to the dentist to have your teeth professionally whitened can get expensive…

Yet as one Sioux Falls dentist tells us, that isn’t your only option.

Most of us head to the dentist for a thorough cleaning. but according to dentist Andrew Johnson, the general brushing you do at home is the best way to whiten your teeth. If you want to brighten your smile even more, you can achieve the results you want with a whitening treatment. There are some minor side effects, but he says the method is safe.

“Whitening is a very safe procedure. You may have some sensitivity, but it’s overall a nice way to brighten up your smile,” Johnson said.

Peroxide-based products from your dentist can be applied in using whitening trays with  gel, or whitening strips. Johnson says any patient can ask for a professional whitening kit, as long as you’re at least 16 years old.

SOPHIE HEINEMANN: “But you don’t have to go to the dentist to get a whiter smile, according to Johnson, over-the-counter products work just as well.”

“You know, any of them will work. They all have the same materials in them, there’s ways you can get it done faster through the dentist but you know, any of those will be easy to use,” Johnson said.

If you do end up with some sensitivity from the whitening, Johnson offers this advice.

“You can always try sensitivity tooth paste. I know we carry a desensitizing gel so if you use a whitening tray you can use your whitening tray to use desensitizing gel and that can help too,” Johnson said.

If you’re willing to spare a little extra time to whiten your teeth at home, you’ll save some money and you’ll have peace of mind knowing the store-bought products are just as safe and effective as if you put yourself in the dentist’s chair to brighten your smile.

Johnson said with the amount of options you have for whitening your smile, time and diligence in the process are the most important key to success.
