Hardware Store Sees Uptick In Business During Cold Snap

News

While many of us can’t wait for this arctic air to go away and for the warmer temperatures to return, for others this cold isn’t all bad news.

Jerry Roby stopped at Nyberg’s Ace Hardware in downtown Sioux Falls Wednesday looking for some gloves…

“I couldn’t find my other pair. I think I gave them away,” Customer Jerry Roby said.

…and a spark plug for a snow blower.

He’s one of many who have walked through the doors this week because of the frigid temperatures.

“Definitely been an uptick Monday and Tuesday. Today a little slower with as cold as it is now…definitely a lot less people moving around today,” Store Manager Zane Hoffelt said.

Some of the most popular items here at the store this week have been space heaters and gloves.

Store Manager Zane Hoffelt is seeing a demand for other items too.

“For the automobile we have jumper cables, battery packs, things to get the car started,” Hoffelt said.

The list goes on.

“Pipe insulation, window insulation, window seals door seals,” Hoffelt said.

And don’t forget the hand warmers.

“With this weather it’s definitely just more keeping yourself warm, keeping your house warm, helping your furnace out with space heaters,” Hoffelt said.

“I’d rather have a beach and sunshine, but I grew up in South Dakota. What are you going to do?” Roby said.

Hoffelt also noted the start of the week may have been busier because people were trying to get ahead of the cold.
